Resources no Longer available in LOGOS

I was wondering how many teachers using LOGOS has run into the following question.

Basically, I was preparing for a course being offered during the fall quarter and wanted to use the LOGOS resource I had used last year. While I still had the resource in my library, when I mentioned to one of the students that I planned to use the book, the student informed me later that it was not available through the LOGOS site. While fortunately, the bookstore had some hard copies, I am disappointed that it was not available through LOGOS. This is the second time this has happened to me. While the first was, "of course, the text is in LOGOS" when asked about a specific text being recommended for a project and therefore not a mandatory text. This was a mandatory text and I now have to revise my syllabus for the next time I teach the course.

Just wondering which text you're referring to?

Books are not normally pulled from Logos - however there have been some major events this year that have caused a bunch to be pulled. Specifically I'm thinking of the Moody titles. There was some sort of contractual dispute that remains unresolved. Though there are now many moody titles available in Vyrso, which will work in Logos.

The specific book that generated the forum question was "EXPLORING THE OLD TESTAMENT by Samuel J. Schultz, Th.D. & Gary V. Smith, Ph.D.

I understand the fact that this removal occurs, I just want to have an indicator in my library that the resources is no longer available via LOGOS so that I know I need to revise syllabus.

Volumes occasionally disappear do to contract issues. Some recent examples are Collegville Library collections (all the Lirtugical press items are all back but the actual collections are gone and for a few months the actual resources were not for sale). IVP's Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture appeared and disappeared several times in past few years. And the Jerome Biblical Commentary has not been for sale for years, indeed Logos has not been able to get prentice hall to allow them to sell it again. And as abondservant pointed out all Moody titles left Logos about 6 months ago. Contracts almost always get renewed, sometimes like in the case with Moody they simply cannot work out a suitable contract and resources get removed from sale.

I for one would rather have a fully tagged book in Logos than a scaled down version in Vyrso. Just my opinion.

Also, I was hoping to see the Moody Publishers back on board by now. Logos and Moody both understand they are providing a ministry to the Body.

Vyrso is likely good enough. In a simple resource like that it is not likely going to be referencing other works beyond the Bible text. Logos is a business, I do believe it is run on Christian principles in general, but in the end they must make a profit. Now if one assumes Logos has a basically similar agreement across the board, one has to wonder why is it good enough for Zondervan/Baker/Crossway/Eerdmans/Fortress/ETC. but not acceptable to Moody? Now I do not know the specific reasons Moody and Logos parted ways but we do know it was not over theological reasons since Moody still sell their books through Vyrso.

Not sure what the issue was, but Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma also disappeared some time ago.

No firm information on this but my guess is this may have been a resource Logos thought they had got proper rights for but then discovered they didn't. I opened up my copy and discovered it was copyright 1955/1957.... Now it seems to me that i read of a large number of titles for mid to late 20th century that are hard to produce in electronic format because of nebulous questions of who is the rightful owner of the rights. Logos may fully think they have done due diligence, but if someone comes forward with a valid claim, it may not be possible for Logos to continue selling it.

Donald - that is one of those things that is easier said than done I should think. I'm no logos employee - or coder... But it seems to me that this is one of those functions that would benefit a very small portion of logos users. Plus I'm sure it would take several people hours upon hours to code it properly. Better to just book mark the book you are using on Logos, and check it out twice a year. Better for Logos to spend the time on things like perfecting PB Sync (something now in bet after having been pulled from beta, something that has been coming soon for years).

I was trying to figure something out to help you... I actually went to Jerome Biblical Commentary and it's info screen and went to recommend. It generated http://biblia.com/books/jbc to an email, which brought up a screen telling me to buy it in Logos. At which point it tells me the book cannot be found. Logos giving an actual product link on the info screen might be the ideal way to know quickly a books status. What I did eventually showed me it was not available but hardly fast. And in your case it is even more complex since it has been replaced with an updated/expanded resource.

I was getting The Sources of Catholic Dogma and Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma mixed up the actual copyright dates for Fundamental are actually 1952/1955. Not that it matters much I just wanted to correct myself.

the work around I think would be best is to create a wish list naming "syllabus" and place all books there. I understand that the books you purchased would be greyed out. But at least you can click the link quickly to see if they are available.

Another work around is to create a new account and place on that wish list. after a while, whenever is greyed out, that would be your red tag. Hope it helps
