OFFLINE download - not an oxymoron

I just updated my iPad with the iOS 8, and to make space, I deleted the logos app, after backup, sync, etc...

Now, while my iPad spins downloading the 4GB of logos resources I need on my iPad, I wonder why I can't connect the iPad to my PC (or a mac) which possess all the resources I own, and copy from the PC (/mac) to my iPad, like I do with iTunes.

I live in a country where internet is not that fast, and both my PC and iPad are logged in with logos (for authentication).

I can think of a number of technical and licensing reasons that would stop this being provided - I don't know which (if any) of these are the reasons why it hasn't been[:)]

It would require extra development and coding on both desktop and iPad platforms to support this functionality and the demand for it doesn't warrant it
Not all resources are enabled for mobile devices. Currently this can be managed using Logos servers in their datacentres as opposed to this having to be managed in each Logos desktop environment
It allows Logos to support one sync mechanism - from iPad to Cloud to Logos 5 - as opposed to supporting a range of different connection options
And mechanisms would need to be put in place to prevent people just connecting an iPad to a desktop and copying all of the Logos resources

As I say whether any of these are relevant I don't know.

I haven't used iTunes backup for a long time. I thought there was an option to include Logos resources in the backup which, presumably, would have allowed you to restore it from your PC after the iOS 8 upgrade. Is this not the case?

I don't believe the files are in the same format for Mac/PC and mobile devices. I'm fairly sure that files for mobile devices:

Strip out features not available on mobile devices.
Includes a resource index as part of the download.

This is interesting. Here is someone else asking/requesting that Logos resources be backed-up to iTunes. As far as I understand it (and I discussed this with an Apple support person), iTunes will backup almost most anything - as long as the developer of the app allows it to take place. The answer I received from a Logos support person was that backing up to iTunes would produce all sorts of problems when updated versions of resources are released and so Logos prefer to handle updates only through the cloud. Of course, if the app was enabled to backup updates would continue to arrive via the cloud (that's the only way they can be delivered to an iPad) - but Paolo is talking about having a local backup for the sake of convenience especially when the speed of the internet does not allow fast restore.

Exactly! I feel that is someway silly that my computer and my iPad who are like 1meter distant cannot talk, and exchange safely data from logos app to logos sw.

You are asking why you can't hook up your iPad to your computer and download resources FROM WITHIN LOGOS 5, right? Well for one, Apple doesn't allow it.

Ah, well! Unfortunately it's not as simple as that. My comments were purely about using iTunes for resource backup and not direct PC to iPad transfer.

Apple does allow it!

Its common for apps to allow transfers of files to/from SMB, FTP, web services and using iTunes, some apps allow you to read or drop files directly to your connected iThing.

In the same way the desktop app wont open a file you don't have a license for, nor would the mobile app, so that part is no issue. Allowing one to drop files using iTunes or something would not be impossible, in concept, in my view. Of course if the file formats are different, that's a whole new story.

(I still wish we could back up notes and other docs from the Windows app, and for the mobile app. I still do not consider the cloud to be a backup.)

Yeah, like when I copy all my stuff to/from Goodreader (tons of pdf books). Or many others. I imagine while I'm with my home Wifi, that my logos app and the logos PC sw talk and check that my account is the same. And then I can direct from my PC what do download.

For me this is a feature I'll pay for it

From the way the release notes were written it looks as though it was never a design goal to support backing up / restoring iPad Logos resources via iTunes.

That's not exactly the same issue. Prior to 2.1.6, iOS backups included resources previously downloaded on the iPhone. It did not let you copy individual resource files to/from your PC to iOS device.

It is quite possible to transfer files to individual apps via iTunes, although it's rather clunky. Personally I'm glad I don't have to do that, as it would be nightmare to keep on top of.

But I still think the main reason this doesn't happen is because the file format is different on the two devices. I can check this for certain tonight.

The mobile apps do use the same resource file format as the desktop app, but they also require additional data from the server that the desktop app does not provide.

Apple only allows user-generated data to be included in iTunes and iCloud backups, hence the change in 2.1.6.
