Updates Give us a Break!!!!!

I would love to just one time open up my program and it didn't have to download 100+mb of updates and then index for an eternity just once... is this to hard to ask...would it be to hard to have updates installed on one day each week GIVE US A BREAK PPPPLLLLEEEAAASSSEEE..........

Updates mean Logos is continuing to add value to the titles we've purchased long after they've received our money. For those of us with broadband internet, its a blessing indeed

I can see where someone on a limited internet plan, or with dial up would not enjoy this... However you have the ability to determine when downloads are downloaded and when they are installed... So if you only want them to download or install on a certain date, disable them, and manually check weekly, monthly, yearly... Whatever floats your boat.

As for me, I will continue to happily download updates however large every day. Blessings

I agree with the OP, since the Massive Update and L6, it does seem like every other time I turn around there is another update. I get why and all, but two weeks of this now is annoying.

Turn off the automatic updates. Yes, the timing is often exasperating, but Logos gives you a choice.

The other thing you can do is do update now and exit the program when the download begins. The download and indexing will complete on their own.

Seriously, we having been going through a period with an extreme number of updates. I've noticed that the L6 updates seem to be batched together a bit more than two weeks ago. I would expect that as soon as the missing resources from the L6 packages are released things will get back to normal.

Each time I open Logos and see updates, I get excited because more resources are now tagged better. download is not an issue even though I have 3mbp download only. Indexing is not an issue because my SSD handles it well.

To those who don't like it, why wouldn't you disable updates. if you disable you won't get updates, and I will since I like them this solution will work for both of us

By turning off automatic download updates. Life becomes quieter. Much more managable. And best of all, no purchasing from Logos!! During the monster download period (probably till next Feb or so for me), I'm been thoroughly enjoying the sales from Accordance (though not the new archaeology media resource; it's not what the internet already delivers far better).

Turning them off doesn't mean you don't get them. It means you get a message that there is an update ready to download. A message which you can ignore until it's convenient.

Yeah, my quality of life with Logos vastly improved after turning off automatic updates. Especially during those times when I'm picking a free Vyrso book every other day. Just let it do it once a week or whenever is convenient.

I'm sorry to hear this is causing some of you frustration. We try to strike a balance between getting updates and fixes into the hands of our users quickly, and not causing pain with frequent downloads and indexing. The launch of Logos 6 required us to update a little more frequently than normal to fix critical bugs. I expect this will start calming down in the near future. We realize that not everyone is on broadband and that indexing can be an inconvenience. We will continue to refine our process to minimize the recurrence of downloads for our users going forward. I suggest you spread out your updates to a monthly cycle, unless there are showstoppers or critical functional deficiencies to address. It's no accident that a tiny company in Redmond has adopted this strategy.

There are other factors in Redmond's decision.

Hopefully they don't switch to this method. I enjoy seeing Logos download new updates. Plus, its in your hands when you want to install them now, you can check on whatever schedule you like.

I love the updates...on days I'm not getting updates, I'm checking 5+ times throughout the day to see if I have any. Updates mean things are getting fixed or added!!! Logos, keep the updates flowing!!!

Yes indeed. On my computer/internet it only takes a moment for them to download, and index as well most of the time. Plus with the tools logos gives us to manage when they download its not even a nuisance. I can use my head, and plan when they will occur so as not to be disruptive. IE at night before bed I kick off the update, wait for the download to start, and then close logos. By morning the updating is done. Then in the morning I check for free books, if any, I kick off the download, close logos, and make my self breakfast. In this way there are no interferences with with my studies.

I did not reach that conclusion from reading the OP. Besides, within the bounds of usual expectation, updates of the magnitude and frequency complained of, belong in "beta" territory.

I'm a user, not a fan. I surmise the silent majority out there would fit in that category also.

I had only owned logos 5 for two months and I bought it at a conference and there was not even a mention of logos 6 but when it came out I upgraded to it (I have the gold) This program cost way too much to have this many problems. the developers need to get on the ball. I think the devs hear you. They may not have the final word on some matters.

Meanwhile, if the program works well enough now, you can mitigate by turning off automatic updates until a few weeks later, or a time when you don't need to use it right away.

Devs: - how about a middle-ground, daily/weekly/monthly user-selectable update-check option? Just a few lines of code.

Most of the updates are not problems. You are not really being fair or objective about this.

There have only been 4 software updates since L6 launch. That is no different than any other major program out there. The rest are resource updates. Many times an update is not fixing a problem, but rather adding addition information/tagging/metadata/footnotes/updates/content to the resource.

We already essentially have daily - simply set a short time frame for download. It shouldn't be hard to add a day of week function or even a day of month although I see some risk with a monthly cycle.

If you have auto updates turned off you can still update at any time by typing "Update Now" in the command bar.

Not a bad idea... I will do that... But the real point is being missed, I know that logos 6 is an extensive program, but when you spend this much on a program you expect it to be right by that i mean the developers have tested it, put it through the paces and fixed the quirks before letting it out the door... Lets be honest if YOU had a brand new car that had to be fixed as much as this program has had to have been you would be screaming at the dealership IMHO...

FWIW... Have had no issues with L6 since its first iteration, don't mind the regular updates (can do other stuff in the background), and my PC is several years old/not that fast, nor is my rural internet speed.

Software is more like making something that has t work internationally whether the power source and control device are a bicycle, oxen jet or car. And yes, I am one who wishes Faithlife had a more rigorous testing program.

Yes, as usual Faithlife released Logos 6 with incomplete development of the resources behind the features. But isn't this (a) their normal pattern of operation and (b) some resources have no meaningful definition of complete (in the same sense that Wikipedia is not complete)?

A few things:

1. You keep saying you paid a lot for the program. Not true. The program (engine) is free and has only had 4 updates since the launch. You PAY for resources.

2. You seem to think that the Logos updates are different than any other software out there. I used to work for Apple and I am telling you this isn't just Logos. It is Apple, Microsoft, Norton, and any other major software company out there.

3. What is so broken with the system that you think you have been cheated? I have used L6 since day one and other than a glitch here and there have had zero problems and the glitches definitely do not merit the types of rants I have seen in this thread.

But I used to have a QA division under my supervision, and I would argue 'supervision' is a major stretch in manufacturing, unless you absolutely do not contract. Software development is similar, I'd assume, with the added risk of the piece of licensed code actually changing beneath your own code at time unspecified.

Indexing is indicative of a resource update. Indexing does not occur when there is ONLY a software update.
