Thinking of an Android Purchase

I've been seeing a lot of what appear to be excellent deals on Android devices. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro, which is nice for its portability, but there are times I don't want to carry around nearly $1,000 in computer that could be easily damaged or destroyed.

I've had an iPad in the past, but they're still relatively expensive. The Logos app for OSX seems very good. Android devices, are pretty cheap--like the Dragon Touch Y88X which is under $60! However, I don't know much about how the capabilities of the Android Logos App compare. Is it as robust as the OSX app?

Also, given that the cheap Android devices like the Dragon have very little memory, I wonder how suitable they are for Logos. I've read in these forums that the expanded micro-SD is not usable for Logos. That really would put a damper on the usefulness of the device when I have a library of about 17 GB.

Your thoughts, please.

The Android (and iOS) apps are excellent applications but not designed to be replacements for, or comparable with, their OSX or Windows counterparts.

They are good for reading the text, doing basic study, highlighting and referring to notes but a lot of the OSX and Windows functionality is not present and probably never will be. For example, on the desktop environments you can create reading plans of some complexity which you can't do on the mobile devices - although the mobile devices can then use them (currently with some exceptions in terms of Logos 6 custom plans)

That really would put a damper on the usefulness of the device when I have a library of about 17 GB.

With the mobile apps you don't need to download resources to your device assuming you are going to use it when you have access to the Internet. On my Android phone I can see most of my resources (some are not mobile-enabled) but only have one currently downloaded to it). So you are in control over what gets physically downloaded to your device.

I use a Nexus 7 2012 with 3G. Since it is the older version I bought it on Amazon for $149. I have iPADs and windows tablets but the Nexus 7 is my most used device and I preach from it every Sunday. It works very well with Logos and I have never had Logos crash on Android (iPAD crashed occasionally). I will eventually upgrade to the Nexus 7 2013 but I am waiting for the price to go down.

As far as screen size as it fits in my blazer pocket perfectly so I take it everywhere and it fits in one hand well and is easy for me to read. Hope that helps.

Another question: I noticed on the airplane when traveling, I read books on Logos on my iPhone and, though they were downloaded, only showed me about the rest of the chapter and then stopped loading (when in Airplane mode). Is that a problem for the Android app on downloaded books?

I really am looking for a cheap device for a reader that wouldn't break my finances if I lose or it gets destroyed. Android devices seem to fit that bill better than touch-enabled Windows machine (though I love my Surface Pro) or an iPad.

Seems to be Apple related.

I just turned off data and wifi on my Android phone and was able to open a commentary (previously downloaded) and navigate to a section that I had not used before.

Wih Google introducing new devices, the Nexus 7 2013 can be found in some locations at clearance prices (got my grandson a 16GB version for $99 (demo model) from Canada's Future Shop back in November.... prefer the 32GB version myself.... both now updated to Android 5.0

Avoid the low end cheap models with tiny memory and old versions of Android.

I have iPad Air & screen isn't big enough for me. Whenever I typed something in L6's Notes and view them in iPad Air, my Notes don't look right (spacing & adjustment)

I'm thinking 'bout getting Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12. Hoping the extra 2.2 inches would help viewing my Notes better.

We have not been told of this capability coming anytime soon (and many have asked for it). There is an option to root the machine and make it believe the SD card is main memory. BTW the capabilities of the Android are virtually the same as the iOS, your Library issue is strange, I hope it gets solved ASAP.

Can all devices be rooted? And when this is performed, does this mean that the Micro SD and internal storage can all be used for Logos books?

I'd rather not buy a device with a huge internal memory--Micro SD cards seem to be pretty cheap, and the only thing of any size I'd want to put on my device is my Logos library.

Hi, Daniel,

Let me add my recommendation for the Nexus 7 (2013). It doesn't have an external microSD card slot, so all memory is internal. You can get the 32 GB version for less from various places, including eBay. You wouldn't have to worry about rooting (unless you wanted to root for other reasons). You would also find the Nexus very capable for other uses besides Logos. It's one of the simplest solutions I know of.

There is a second possibility. There are a few Android e-readers out there that use E-Ink technology. They are meant mainly for reading (not for gaming or movies) and they are not all that easy to find. But some people find E-Ink easier on the eyes for long periods of use. A 6-in. e-reader like this will run you around $120-$150. A couple can be found on Amazon, for starters - the Boyue T62 and the Onyx Boox AfterGlow 2. These kinds of devices require a bit more work to set them up to your liking than a tablet like the Nexus 7 would, however.

I have the Nexus 7 and it does a good job. I prefer my iPad for the larger screen but as you mentioned it is pricier.
