What is it downloading?

OK, I have purchased a collection (larger) and two individual book resources (very small),and the same thing happens every time, there is a "downloading updates" of 216.3 MB every time! Here is the sequence, it is identical each time:

1. Do purchase, unlock via L3, verify in L3 resources are there, Sync licenses, backup licenses

2. Open L4, do Update Resources, Download of resources starts. I leave L4 open

3. Download finishes, it says click to restart L4. I do that.

4. When L4 opens, *the new resources are there*. But at this point, it says "Logos Software is downloading updates 216.3MB" in the system tray.

5. When that download finishes, indexing will start, and then everything proceeds smoothly to completion from there.

So what is step 4? It happens every time! And I have done "Update now" before any of this to ensure things were current..

My guess is that it's the Bib. Sacra journals 1-90. Together they are about that size that you mentioned. That is, if you have those journals.

I'm still waiting for all my downloads to finish to end up in that loop myself I think[:D]

You might need to move those resources out of your libronix3 folder if you want to stop the looping. I think it's a combination with the date and the fact you have newer ones in your L3 folder and the logos servers are downloading older versions.

Also the newer files have the name LLS:bsac_(number) while the older version that is being downloaded has LLS:BSAC_(number). I don't know if this also causes any problems.

You may be on to something Henry! I do have Bib Sacra, I do have the newest versions in my L3 folder, and I did a properties under File Explorer of 1-90 and it's 215MB estimated!

On a lark I did a scan of the L3 Resources folder and it is doing the download of 216.3MB again. I think, if I can stand another download [:S], I will turn on logging and try this again to confirm - or maybe as you suggest I will delete them from L3, Scan, and see if the download still happens.

Is this a known bug that needs to be reported?

Well I pulled out the Biblia Sacra 1-90 from L3, did a Scan, and only 1 file was updated - and it will try to update this every time. Checking the logs, the file is GS_JBMW_10.lbxlls, same file name in L3 and L4. I copied the relevant parts of the Logos4 Log and Indexer log below, it seems to want to download this file every time, I guess the version on the server is older than the one I got off the ftp site (or from Galaxie? I forget where I got it).

The bad thing is it tries to update these files if any resource is added, without looking at L3.

Is this a bug to be reported, or does Logos know about it?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that "GS_JBMW_10" is also a problem. I have a 2009 version already, but it's downloading the 2006 version.

Again the resource id's list here as "LLS:GS_JBMW_10" and "LLS:gs_jbmw_10"

I'm experiencing the same problem since installing Bibliotheca Sacra. Every time I start L4 after closing it for a while, it takes about 10 minutes to load the program and when it does finally open it announces yet another 214.9 MB download and way we go again. It is extremely annoying to have to wait 10 minutes each time you open L4.

When checking the log it will say that the ones with lower case are up to date, then say that the ones with capital letters are out of date.

The reverse is happening with "LLS:gs_jbmw_10" and "LLS:GS_JBMW_10". That is it says the capital letter one is up to date and the lower case one is out of date. You can see this with the partial log from Dominick quoted from the earlier post:

I did a file compare of two of the files, and they were different. You may want to try just renaming one of the lower case files to upper case and see if that makes a difference?

I was hoping to see this issue addressed in the 4.0b beta but I don't think it is...

Well I thought I may have found a way to eliminate this problem, but in fact I think this shows there really is a bug going on here, probably server-side. Logos can you please help?

Here is what I did, the problem being the GS_BSAC_1 to 90 files, and GS_JBMW_10, for 216.3MB, will download on any opportunity (like a Scan:, or if a new resources is downloaded.) I tried deleting the downloadmanager.db and updates.db (I think these were the ones I deleted, I used Dave Hooton's email), and no improvement. My latest ploy to get resources on my laptop that Logos was happy with:

1. Did a Scan C: just to initiate a scan (no Logos files there)

2. Restarted L4 - it eventually downloaded 216.3MB of files, but nothing updated. It's just a long waste of time between the download and reindex.

3. So then I did another Scan C: and then exited the program.

4. I moved those 91 files out of my Resources folder. Restarted L4. It updated my Resources folder with the 91 files! Maybe these will be good...

5. So then after indexing etc., I did a Scan C:, exited L4, restarted. It downloads the bogus 216.3MB again (same ones it just populated the resource with)

I wish this would get fixed...

That observation is quite significant. According to Resource Information my Logos LXX has id. LLS:LOGOSLXX. If I type that into the Command bar it will open the resource. If I type LLS:logoslxx it will not recognise the resource! You can try this yourself as I don't have any Galaxie resources with GS_ as id. NOTE that the LLS: must be uppercase for command recognition.

I seem to have had the same problem with the same resource. But it was not a problem until today when I was informed of an update and clicked to update. So my understanding is that I had the latest Bibliotheca 1-90 reources available to me and I was able to use them. But now with the update, I was caught in the continual update mode. I fixed it as was suggested by Henry and the problem went away. So it seems I cannot enjoy the latest updates ot Bibliotheca until logos puts them on their website.

As an interesting aside, both old and new resources on my computer...the l3 and l4 resources were all in caps.

Yes copying L4 lbxlls files into L3 Resource folder fixes the problem. One side effect in the L3 world, I have for years used the utility JTFTP to tell me what is new on the ftp server to download to L3. Well, that reports a lot of resources newer there than in my L3 folder now, I guess there is quite a lag getting things onto the L4 servers. I hope they update soon, especially the Biblia Sacra journals etc...

In other news, if you notice, most of the lbxlls resources in the L4 folder have an Oct 2009 date, yet they are identical to older versions in the L3 folder (I did a binary compare of every lbxlls file in the L4 folder against its L3 counterpart, and all were identical). Logos must have just "touched" them to change the date/time when they created the L4 server in October.

Mark, it's not the filenames that are having uppper case and lower case problems. It's the internal resource id's of the files.

This will let Logos see the files as different resources, but they have the same filenames. That's why you end up in a loop.

Translating the log, this is what is happening: [:D]

Logos 4 starts up, it detects that you have new bib sacra resources in you L3 folder and it copies them over. Those files have lower case resource id's.

When you get a online update, Logos says, hey, you have a license for the bib sacra journals but you don't have them in your folder because we have the "upper case resource id's" files on our server and you don't have those. No problem we'll haul them over for you.[:|]

After downloading it copies them into your L4 folder. It overwrites the ones you already have because the filenames are identical.[^o)]

Everything works fine, util there is a local scan of your L3 folder again. L4 detects you have the bib sacra journals but the ones in the L3 folder are newer.[*-)]

It copies them over again replacing the "uppercase id's" with the "lowercase id's"[8o|]

Then the loop starts with Logos detecting that you don't have the "uppercase id" files.[:S]

Henry I don't think this is exactly what is happening. I can tell by file compares that the resources are not replaced in the L4 resources folder. I also know that it does not require a Scan to get the cycle going again, unless somehow a Scan is always done once you have done one - like attached to your account or something, but I doubt that happens too.

I have had a resource update come down from Logos, initiated by me, and it did the download. I can do a Scan of a folder with no Logos resources in it, and it will initiate the download.

It seems to me the download may come down as you describe, but then it sees the resources are the same some how (contrasted to the logic that sees different file ids and initiates a download, this logic sees that the resource ids are the same even though case is different so it does not update the L4 folder maybe?) so no replace is done.

Well, that is what happened to me. L4 scans your L3 folders automatically anytime it feels like something has changed.

My newer files did get replaced with the ones which L4 downloaded. After downloading it asks to restart. After I restart, it copies the downloaded ones over and then it copies the ones from my L3 folder over without my intervention. (this is in one session) And then it starts to index.

It doesn't matter if you scan an empty folder. It will scan the L3 folder first. (unless you rename the l3 folder and it can't find the files).

This is the problem I get with other .Lbx files and .logos4 files. If I put some .logos4 files in a folder and I have newer file dates of lbx files in my L4 folder OR L3 folder already and I scan the folder with the .logos4 files, they never make it into the L4 folder.

This is what I saw happening. L4 first copies over any downloaded resources, then copies over any L3 Folder resources, then copies over any user specified folde scans. When I had newer .lbx files in my L4 folder, the .logos4 files that I put in another folder are just ignored .

You can do a small test if you still have the newer bib sacra journals from galaxie. Rename one of them e.g. gs_bsac_001 -> gs_bsac_001a. Put that into a folder and scan it. It will copy it over, but this time it will not replace the other one because of the filename difference. It will do a small indexing.

After that, check your amount of books in the library. It will be your original amount + 1. If you check your bib sacra 1 journal you'll notice that it will be listed twice.

Beware though, if you do the test, I don't know how to completely remove the file except hiding it. If I delete it from the resources folder, it ends up as missing in my library. I don't know if it goes away after some time. I think some of the more experienced beta testers could answer that question.
