Typo in ESV Numbers 34:28-29?

I found something interesting. Numbers 4:28-29 in the ESV seems to have a misplaced quotation mark. The quote should go at the end of verse 28. Instead it goes at the end of verse 29. This doesn't make sense and it is in conflict with all other translations I consulted. Interestingly, Logos doesn't have a "report typo" function available for the ESV so I figured I'd report it here.

It appears that this same typo exists across other editions of the ESV text at other sites. I emailed Crossway.

It's that way in the print edition of the ESV as well, so it's likely that Logos wouldn't fix it unless/until the ESV fixes it in a future edition, if indeed they think it's an error. They might have done it that way on purpose. The Lord sometimes speaks about himself in the third person, so it's conceivable that one could read this sentence as part of the quote. Quotation marks didn't exist in Hebrew anyway, so it's up to the reader to figure out from context where the quote ends.

Hmm, the Report Typo command doesn't care what resource you're in (as long as it is indeed a resource rather than a media collection or something else). It works fine in the ESV for me. Make sure you have the Selection tab selected on the right side. It doesn't show up for the Reference tab (by design).

Absolutely. It was probably a translation decision, not a typo. You have some of the same ambiguity in the NT as well, e.g. where do the quotes really start and end in John chapter 1, or John chapter 3.

Yup there is ambiguity because original doesn't have them so it is an interpretive call...I could see how the quotes could extend to the end of the paragraph. There are other summary "These are" statements in the book (Numbers 39:13) that are not seen as YHWH quotes. I had not found a version that had decided to include Numbers 34:29 as part of the YHWH quote so I figured it was a mistake. I actually now found another version apparently made the same interpretive decision as ESV. The NLT puts the quotes in the same spot
