the file is not saved as Excel if it contains a period
Standard file naming prohibits the use of a period any place but at the division of file name and extension. This is not a Logos convention but a Microsoft et. al. convention.
Okay. I save files all the time using this naming convention and the program (Word, PDF, Publisher, etc.) saves it with the appropriate type. I used the same naming convention with Excel and it doesn't have a problem. It seems rather odd that L4 lets me save the file using my naming convention and retains my name, but it will not retain the type for me.
What is your operating system?
Windows Vista Ultimate
You are correct that Vista does permit a period. Log this as a bug.
What's the procedure?
Post it here in the forums with a title that begins with BUG:
If you are comfortable with updating the wiki as well, but if you are not someone will insure it is logged there.
Actually no need to post it again. You can edit your first post in this thread up to I think 18 hours after you posted it and just add "BUG: " in front of the title. That way all the relevant discussion will be preserved. To edit a post, click the "More" dropdown to the right of it and select Edit.
On the other hand, one of us could always just log it over on the wiki without you going to the trouble since we already know it's a bug. I'll go do that now.
Thanks. I was unable to edit my first post.
I have logged in on the wiki: http://wiki.logos.com/Bug$3a_Export_not_providing_file_extension_if_filename_contains_a_period
Hi Paul,
I'm sorry for the delayed response. I've tested this two different ways and had success with both.
First, when I saved the file as conjunctions.kai, Excel did not recognize .kai as a file extension and brought up a message saying, "The file you are trying to open, 'conjunctions.kai' is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?" I clicked on Yes, and the file opened as expected.
Next, I saved the file as conjunctions.kai.xml ('Excel (.xml)' was the default option in the Export Save As dialog). That file opened immediately in Excel because it recognized the .xml extension.
Try one of those options to see if they work for you in the same way, and let me know if they do not.
Thanks,Melissa

I believe Paul's point was not that he can't open the saved file in Excel, but that the .xml extension is not supplied automatically when you name the file conjunctions.kai, which it should be. Since the default option in the Export Save As dialog is .xml, that extension should be added to the filename no matter what is typed for the filename (unless you've already typed the .xml extension). In the case of a filename that has a period in it (such as conjunctions.kai), no extension is supplied. Yes, it is still saved as an XML file and Excel can open it after you confirm the message. But you shouldn't even have to get a mismatched file extension message.
So the problem is this behavior of not automatically adding the proper extension to a filename if it already has a period in it; other apps (Word, Excel, etc.) handle this situation correctly. I have confirmed this.
Makes sense--I'll report it.
