Logos Now vs. Full versions

Perhaps this has already been answered somewhere: will Logos Now subscribers have access to ALL the features buyers of the full version will get? (datasets, tools, engine, etc). I realize that new packages may include resources as well and that these may not be included in Logos Now, but there is even a question to be had with regard to core resources. I guess I am trying to figure out the economics of the Logos Now route and whether it is truly an alternative to full ownership.

By way of comparison, Microsoft Office subscriptions are very much like that: it costs as much and for students less, to subscribe for 4 years than to buy a full new version and the result is the same. I realize of course that this entails only the use of software, not resources as in Logos, but still it provides the background for evaluating the cost of subscription vs ownership with logos as well.

I believe this is the case, but could not point to a definite answer from FL. It's just an impression I get from all the information I have read.

Depends on what full versions we're talking about.

It depends what base package you own.

Logos 6 Gold or higher or Feature Crossgrade or higher + Logos Now = all features, datasets, interactives, and media collections.

So if you have Logos 6 Gold or higher and Logos Now, you'll have 100% of the features and functionality of Logos 7, and you'll have stuff that Logos 7 owners won't.

Logos 5 Gold + Logos Now = all features, datasets, interactives, and media collections - (Logos 6 Gold - Logos 5 Gold).

IOW, Logos Now doesn't include anything in Logos 6. It only adds to it.

According to the earlier Forum posts, if you have Logos Now you might even have "more" than what will be in the Logos 7 cross-grade.

But no one was willing to give a definitive answer [perhaps not wanting to "over promise"]?

Up until now the question was always asked he "other" way: "If I buy the L7 cross-grade will it include all of the Logos Now features?" But "they" [Logos] still will not really say.

SteveF, if Logos is going on a two year release cycle, they probably have not decided what will be in Logos 7. We are less than a year in Logos 6. Third quarter of next year may be a better time to ask your question.

Then what is "Logos Now" <currently> all about? FL should absolutely have an idea where L7 is going... not to say that there won't be changes... nor that those plans should be made available for public consumption... but they DO "know," even if those plans change.

EDIT: I also don't know why anyone would care if getting "Logos Now" will mean having "all the features of L7." It really is a pointless question at this point. "Logos Now" is a SERVICE, which includes "advanced availability of future tools NOW." If when L7 comes out, if you want to maintain the "ownership" model, you are going to have to purchase those tools, or lose access to them when you quit subscribing.

I <think> FL will end up giving subscribers a discount of some sort, but that is a guess. The discount, however, would likely not equal the amount paid.

Yes, but remember that as soon as you stop subscribing to Logos Now, you lose every benefit. You don't keep what's already been delivered. Because of that, it can never truly be an alternative to full ownership.

I think what you mean by this is "I don't anticipate that Logos Now will ever replace full ownership for me." Logos Now will be an alternative for many to purchasing Feature Crossgrade with each new release. As long as the individual continues to subscribe as long as he needs access and doesn't care to bequeath datasets, etc., Logos Now absolutely will be an alternative to full ownership.

But it is true that one's circumstances can change and a person may not be able to continue subscribing. Then indeed, one would be turned back to whatever features one had last purchased. Paradoxically, the longer one has subscribed, the greater the downgrade would be if they had to discontinue, which means that longer subscription is -- from this standpoint -- less rewarding. For this reason, I tend to think that FL should come up with a 2 year subscription deal (since they say their new cycle is 2 years now) and those who pay for it get permanent ownership of the features of the new release when it comes out. This would make it a much more attractive option and a truer alternative.

That would be something like the "As Released" option on the Master Journal Bundle—without a single lump payment. I would think that would be a good offer.

Yes, I've suggested something like that previously. A two-tier system for Logos Now:

The current $8.99/month rental option.
A higher priced ($14.99/month?) option that includes rental of the services, but ownership of the datasets/features that are released during your membership.

Apparently one of the problem with my suggestion, is that it would be difficult to build the backend system to track what everybody owns. As you suggest, it might be simpler to just say that we could effectively buy the L7 crossgrade now, and get free use of the services until L7 comes out.

I would be much more interested in some form of a "rent to own" deal than a straight-up rental.
