Teach Me: Finding a location

Ok, I am in Isaiah 7.3 and it references the "upper pool". So, I want to see a where the upper pool was, so I did a basic search on upper pool on my entire library (Scholar) and came away with 150 hits.

1. Question: Of those 150 the majority were bibles, which do not give me what I want which is a map with a location. How do I trim those hits from the search results.

2. I am slogging through the rest of the hits, and while they give me verbal description, what I am looking for is a map. Any suggestions on how/what to search?

3. I tried biblical places, and while it does have information on the Fuller's field, which is mentioned in the verse, it draws a blank on "upper pool"

This has always been my problem with Logos, and with the upgrade to Gold, I only see it getting worse. How do I winnow the chaff from the grain?

And Damian wins the prize!!! [:D] #image "upper pool" did the trick, out of almost 600 books, I had one (New Bible Dictionary) that gave me a map.

BTW, this did generate false hits as well, but not as many. Any article that had the search term of upper pool and an image returned a hit.

Thanks Damian. BTW, I still would like to answer the question when searching the entire library, is there any way to exclude certain types of resources (collections?) from the results?

I did a search of my entire library for "upper pool" ANDNOT type:bible. I came up with 198 hits still, but I quickly scanned through them and saw a number of images. One especially from the Images of the Holy Land seemed to give a good view.

Gary, when I do that, I still pull hits from bibles, Damians #image search showed me how to limit the search to articles that contained images. But excluding Bibles will be a useful parameter as well.

Rather than search the entire libary, it might be more productive to search your Bible dictionaries for "Upper Pool" (including the quotes so you get a match on the phrase.)

If you have a collection for your Bible dictionaries, you can choose that in the Search box (inside of Entire Library.)

If you don't have a collection, it's easy to define you. Tools | Collections (under Library.) Then make a new collecton for resources matching:
(type:dictionary) AND (lang:English)

If collections are new, see http://wiki.logos.com/Collections

(In general, I find it much more productive to search a relevant collection rather than everything in a large library.)

Just to quickly note as Allen said, this is why I search collections; not for speed but it's an effort to "pre-winnow" the hits so that they make sense in answering whatever Q I'm asking.

Allen and Robert, I have collections and I do use them to limit search area. Actually, normally I don't even have to search them because the cited tool does such a good job pre-pulling the information I need.

Maybe I am trying to count the number of angels on the head of this pen, but I am trying to stretch my proficiency with L4. I was looking for something unusual and didn't know where to look. It could have been in a bible dictionary, it could have been a map set, it could have been in a commentary or a monograph. I didn't know where it was, but I did know one place it wasn't, it wasn't in a Bible. I had actually tried the ANDNOT and NOTEQUAL operators with the type:bible and they still pull up Bible hits. Robert, have you tried running a search with the ANDNOT type:bible and it did work for you? If so, back to the drawing board for me, I even went into the library and made sure the bibles in question were labeled the correct type.

Terry, just like in math/logic, the ANDNOT operator will only work if it's got something to operate with, in other words there has to be something to the left of it. So try this trick to narrow a search down to everything in your library except Bibles:

rating:>=0 ANDNOT type:Bible

Actually, there's a shorthand for ANDNOT which I prefer to use, and that's simply the minus sign (-) prefixed immediately to the search term (no space between), so you'd do this as:

rating:>=0 -type:Bible
