OT: Prayers for Haiti after earthquake

Just saw this breaking news. A 7.0 (or so) earthquake rocked Haiti today about 3 hours ago. Multi-story buildings have collapsed. Hundreds, if not thousands have been killed.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere. It is located on the island of Hispaniola, as is the Dominican Republic.

Please pray for the people of Haiti as they recover from this, that those trapped but still alive may be found quickly, that the injured can be cared for adequately and appropriately, and that as aid comes it, that it could be given effectively and wisely.

There are also many missionaries in Haiti, including some friends of mine in Port Au Prince. Pray for them too, not only for their safety, but that they can be effective witnesses of God's mercy in these horrid circumstances.

Father of all mercy, hear the cry of your people . . .

My heart joins yours in prayer Richard.

I also am friends with several missionaries in Haiti, a country I have visited and taught in annually. Having seen the construction practices and "infrastructure" first hand I know this is catastrophic.

This is devastating. My aunt and uncle have been on a couple of teaching/ministry trips to the little Episcopal seminary in Port-au-Prince, and the Cathedral with its World Heritage frescoes which were already in need of a million dollars for restoration (and repair of the roof through which rain came to damage the frescoes). Now no doubt the damage from the earthquake has made restoration of the frescoes a moot point. My great-great-grandfather Bishop Alonzo Potter (Episcopal Bishop of New York) was instrumental in appointing the first black Episcopal bishop to the diocese of Haiti and establishing that church and its seminary.

"Haitian television reported that the presidential palace, many government buildings and a cathedral, along with roads and bridges, lay in ruins."

Very sad. But of course it's the people that matter more than the buildings.
