A better option is to read something like New Testament Commentary Survey. You get a description of each commentary's strengths and weaknesses - this has saved me an incredible amount of money and it has pointed me to resources I never would have considered otherwise.

Carson's advice is contradictory sometimes; e.g. in one place he recommends College Press NIV commentaries and later in the same book he doesn't and says they're not good or too rudimentary. He does that with others also. Overall I guess he's ok in his advice.

The rankings at best commentaries are useless to me without annotation. I need to know a volume's strengths and weaknesses and a numerical ranking with limited blurbs scraped from other websites does nothing to help me with that.

While I can't speak of every instance my guess is that you're referring to places where Carson makes an assessment of a series as a whole and then makes a different assessment of an individual volume within that series.
