I am considering adding a base package that has the IVP New Testament Commentary set. Can you tell me if this set is very good or not, how does it compare to the Tyndale set? Thanks

    Hi Kason

I have Tyndale commentary (also published by IVP) it covers the whole bible, General good even series,

I also have Craig Keeners IVP New Testament Commentary on Matthew which is a must!!!

There may be 1 or 2 others in IVP NTC worth pursuing i.e Bock

Overall I think Tyndale is the better series and very good value for money.

    The choice is yours!

A place to get help evaluating sets is bestcommentaries.com. They have the option to show you a whole series on a page so you can see how all of them rate versus other commentaries. Here is the page for the IVPNTC.

First of all, they are both very good.  If I could only have one, I would go with Tyndale because it is a very solid set on the entire Bible. For the money, it maybe the best value in a commentary set. However, the IVP is somewhat more detailed/in depth (at least the volumes I have used) but it only covers the NT.  If you do not have it, the Expositor's Bible Commentary (older version) is also and excellent value on the entire Bible.

The Expositors use to be dirt cheap in Logos and then the price skyrocketed...sigh.

You got great replies here...all of them spot on too.

I have the Tyndale and enjoy it...the other set is ONLY NT and I tend to like useful inexpensive (not overly scientific or scholarly) commentaries that help me preach, reach and teach others.

God bless your usage of whichever resource you buy though.  I am off to look this one up.

as I read it was a good one to own above...yay/thanks.

p.s. I have found this indispensable time and time again too
