Creating collections by series title

Is there a way to drag a whole series title to a collection "plus these resources" or do I have to manually type in the series name? I have sorted the list by Series, but the series title cannot be dragged. It is kind of a pain to create the collection by entering the series titles in the search criteria, because if I type in a series name, then I lose the list. So I am cutting and pasting the search criteria a lot so I can see the whole list again.

Joe has given you the link on creating a collection by specifying a rule, so you'll end up with a rule like this:

series:"Word Biblical Commentary" OR series:"Bible Speaks Today"

or if you have many to specify, you could use:

series:("Word Biblical Commentary", "Bible Speaks Today","Some Other Series")

You just type enough to be unique eg.

series:("Word Biblical", "Bible Speaks","Some Other")

You can very easily create individual Collections for each of your series. Then to gather multiple series into one collection, all you have to do is open the Collections drop down and drag the series that you want into your "Plus these resources" in your new collection. This will add all the books in that collection to your new collection. Do this for as many series collections as you want to add to your new collection.

I create a new collection for each new series of commentaries that I get. I precede the title with "COM: Name of Series " to show that it is a commentary collection. I will also put an additional letter in for the type of commentary series it is. T=Technical, D=Devotional.... you get the idea. I then created new collections with all the different series that I would consider fall into the same type (ie...technical commentaries). This gives more control over what types I am wanting to search.

BUT, In the present beta version [4.0b Beta 5 (4.02.3.5543)] the Resource Associations are being 'tweaked." Therefore In the future (for some of these collections) you may want to/need to uncheck the new "box" beside the Collections name ("Show in Parallel Resources).

I'm just not sure how many "collections" are optimum in terms of this working properly.

we have been told that if we have "dozens" of Collections and if they have "too many hundreds or thousands" of resources, that there may be an issue.

Okay, so currently I have 94 collections. Some by authors, some commentaries, some maps, some theology, some dictionaries & encyclopedias, some character studies....you get the idea.

From what you are saying I may have a problem when they do the next update? I didn't have any problem with so many collections in L3. So I guess I have questions as to what is the purpose of having collections, if you are limited in them. Does that mean that I will have to tag the books individually? I'm sure Logos developers know where they are going with this and it would help to hear from them, so that I am not wasting my time with the collections.

I will quickly say that some here, (including Mr. Mark Barnes who has made some VERY helpful videos) also appear to have "many" collections.

But this is really my "concern" too...I'm hoping that someone (like Mark or others) who "gets" the newer "dynamic" version -- yet can also see the value of Resource Associations might lend more light as we continue down this"path."

I assume that with my many new L4 collections that I am probably still working like the "old L3".

Yet as interesting as the new L4 instant "all" library searches are, there just seems to be too much "chaff" amongst the mega-number of "hits" returned?

Perhaps this is the point or topic with which the Morris Proctor's seminars will have to deal?

I don't recall that exact wording. Right now there seems to be a problem in the beta with taking lots of CPU time to create and maintain Parallel Resources that could be linked to having lots of collections. However, we have not been told that we have to look forward to eliminating collections or be stuck with horrible speed issues once the beta goes public. I believe that Logos is looking at 'optimizing' this feature.

Thank you Mark, the link was helpful.
I will just continue doing what I'm doing until it proves to be a problem and address it then.
Hopefully they will get it all worked out before they release it in an update.

The beta for the next version 4.0b introduces Parallel Resource Sets, known as Parallel Resource Associations (PRA) in L3. The difference is that L4 PRA's are based on Collections and a simple tick will determine if you want the collection to be treated as a PRA.

If and when implemented, no collection will be nominated as a PRA by default - you will have to make the choice because many collections are not suited to be a PRA eg. a collection of English Bibles is OK, a collection of NT commentary sets is OK because you can navigate from John 1:2 in one set to John 1:2 in another set, but a collection of NT books in one set has no value as a PRA. A collection of "All Resources except Bibles" is useless as a PRA as well as being very large!

So there should be no issue in having a large number of (large) collections, you just have to be careful about nominating PRA's.
