Senior Pastors and Deacons: Take a survey, get a chance to win $100 Logos credit

I hope this isn't against forum guidelines, but I am in need of senior pastors and deacons to take a survey to help me complete my dissertation on church polity. Participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win at least one $100 Logos gift card (Logos credit) [depending upon how many participate - for every 15 who participate, I will add another $100 in Logos credit - so you chance to win is = or > 1/15 ].

I filled it in. The questionnaire wasn't a great fit for our church. You don't seem to make a distinction between elders and deacons, which we do, and that made the questionnaire hard to fill in.

FYI, our deacon's job description begins with the words, "The job of the deacons is to make the elders job as easy as possible".

Thanks for the input. I don't think I quite follow this statement, though. You did see there is a separate survey for the senior pastor/lead elders vs the deacons, right?

FYI, our deacon's job description begins with the words, "The job of the deacons is to make the elders job as easy as possible".

I LIKE THIS! Gonna borrow that, because it is so true theologically! Thats basically the premise of my dissertation in a nutshell. LOL. Well said, and thanks again!

Sorry my friend. Participants must be in a verifiable senior pastor / lead elder/ teaching elder position or in a deacon position, at present or within the last 12 months. The questions wouldn't relate to you, and you wouldn't find them meaningful anyway. :-)

Some churches have teaching Elders (which i think would be covered by your first survey) but the also have ruling Elders and Deacons, whose job spec is different, someone may be an elder and a deacon, but they do not have to be. In this case elders tend to look after spiritual matters while the deacons look after the practical ones. I think the point being because of your supinations that you have left no place for ruling elders, i.e. someone that is not a senior/teaching elder but is an elder none the less.

I was thinking along the same lines (I think) as Mark.

My church has no deacons at this point. We have an "advisory" board that functions in the capacity of an elder board. It was called this because no one would join an elder board... We will have deacons - as soon as the Lord sends us some.

Entered - I am the senior pastor of our congregation composed of ca. 8-10 senior citizens who live in a senior apartment complex. The congregation has no deacons - in our denomination I am an ordained elder. I completed the survey as best I could given our circumstances.

I did, and I filled in the one for pastors/elders.

But on the first question answers (1) and (4) are both true of me (because although the pastor is an elder, the elders are not necessarily pastors). The rest of your questionnaire refers to pastors (rather than elders), so as was confused about where we fitted in. In addition, the description of deacons responsibilities in your survey almost all use the word "oversee" whereas we would read the NT as equating bishops/presbyters/elders/overseers as distinct from deacons (who are servants). So we would see oversight as an eldership responsibility, not a deaconate responsibility.

Entered...but my church has no elders, all deacons are elected by the congregation to lead the church in all matters, of cause with the pastor to guide us in spiritual matters.

I am still needing some DEACONS to fill out the survey (and more pastors too, if they can - but need deacon responses more so). If you have deacons in your church, would you forward them the link and ask them to participate?? I would be most appreciative!

THANK YOU all so very much. I have enough Pastor responses now to begin formulating some assumptions based on the data. However, I still need about 10 or so more DEACON responses to have a solid deacon survey.

Other questions asked in my Church would refer to the Elders

We have pastors, elders and deacons
Other churches that I have attended have pastors and deacons that serve as my current church’s elders.
Then in other churches the deacons are seen almost as junior pastors

Yes, in some churches the deacons or elders ‘run’ the church and the pastor is responsible to them. Others the elders report to the pastor. Have fun with the job descriptions / definitions.
