This is somewhat off topic, but I was wondering when to cite an article or the entire book. For example, in the Lexham Bible Dictionary article on the Canon formation, which citation is appropriate for what situation?
I would go with the second one as it gives the reader a better idea where the information came from. He/she knows they have to look at the topic "canon" in the Dictionary.
Basic rule of thumb - a footnote reference will be to the article; the bibliography will show the dictionary.
Thanks.
