Bible Word Study Causing Crash

Here is my system info:

Logos 4 4.0a SR-3(4.01.3.5180)

Gateway Tablet Laptop:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz

Memory 2.00 GB 32-Bit Operating System Windows 7 Professional

120 GB hard drive 20GB free space

From any Bible I chose when I <Right-Click> a word and select BWS from the window the BWS window opens up and begins search. The whole screen "grays out" and I receive the Logos 4 Bible Software 4 has stopped working - Debug or Cancel option.

Everything else appears to be working properly.

The Logos4 Log Files in the c:mydocuments/logos log files are the log files that were created on 1/20/2010 when I had a start-up issue then.

I have started Logos 4 holding down the <CTRL> key and starting from blank page. I still get the same crash using BWS but I do not see anything new being written to the log files suggesting a reason for the crash????

Any suggestions.

We've seen this error from the Indexer as well. The cause is unknown, but here are some suggestipons:-

scan (chkdsk C:\) your hard drive for errors; and
rebuild your index ("Rebuild index" command)

Thanks for the suggestion but it did not solve the problem. I have attached the log files from this morning and it looks much like one I posted yesterday. It appears that the error is occuring in this line of the log files:

Try deleting the contents of this folder: C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<random>\LibraryIndex and then start Logos. For some reason sometimes Logos won't rebuild an index properly until the old one has been deleted.

I followed your suggestion and Logos automatically perfromed index when starting up. I received the same result. Logos 4 crashes when doing a BWS.

Anyone have anymore suggestions.

Let's see if we can debug the BWS. If you do not have a custom BWS then make a custom BWS the same as the one you are running. Edit the template of your custom BWS and remove 1 section, starting with Textual Search. If it crashes replace that section and remove another section, etc. Hopefully you will remove a section and it will not crash.

I know how to customize the Home Page. I do not know how to customize the BWS page. Logos 4 crashes before it will open that page. Is there away to customize a page when it won't open without crashing????

Choose "Bible word" in the upper right of this new guide template. Then click on items under "Individual Sections" to add whatever sections to it that you want.

Give it a name by clicking on the pencil icon near "Untitled Guide"

To run this custom BWS, select it from the Guides menu.

I created the custom template. I added one item to the template. As soon as I typed in a word it crashed. I removed that item and added another single item with same results. I repeated this with every item with same results?????

I have found two other users who reported this same crashing error (Google search: SQLiteException malformed site:community.logos.com), but none of them seems to have been resolved yet. It is probably some other database file besides the index which is corrupted. I don't know what all the various .db files do, but I think (Kevin, please confirm!) that they can all be safely deleted and Logos will regenerate them next time you start up. There is a .db file in each of the subfolders of C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<random>. I'm not sure which one(s) it would help to delete in this case, but you could try backing them all up somewhere safe, then deleting them all (except the index one which you've already rebuilt) and restarting Logos. If this works, report back here and we can let the other folks getting this particular SQLiteException crash this we've found a way to fix it. If you have the time and patience, you might try deleting each of these .db files one at a time and restarting Logos in between each time so we can narrow down which file it is that's causing the problem.

There are also .db files inside each of the folders in C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents\<random>, but I'd be more nervous about deleting those, because they might have to do with user-created stuff. However the one that might be most likely to help in this situation (since it happens when you're running a Guide) would be C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents\<random>\Guides\guides.db. Copy it somewhere else first, and then try deleting it, and see if that solves the problem.

Ideally it would be nice if Logos could ascertain how these files can sometimes get corrupted (it might be their fault). So maybe once you've figured out which one was causing the problem, take the backup of the corrupted file that you isolated and post it here as you did your log file, and perhaps they can take a look at it and debug from there.

I followed your suggestions. Nothing changed the BWS crash. I did not touch those files in C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents\<random as you were nervous in deleting them.

That's a tough call. If you're willing to delete and reinstall, and you're also someone who is willing to assist Logos in finding fixes for bugs, you might be interested in checking out 4.0b, which is now on Beta 6 and is pretty stable. I know they fixed a bug having to do with SQLiteException back in 4.0b Beta 1 (here's Bradley's note about it: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/8337/69436.aspx#69436; and here are the release notes saying it was fixed: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/8859.aspx). It's a bit of a risk to you because: (1) it was a different SQLiteException that I'd reported, not the database image malformed one, so it might not fix your problem (but it might); and (2) it's a beta so there could be other bugs; but these are mostly likely to be only in new features that have been added since 4.0a.

So I think it's up to you whether you keep slogging it out hoping to fix what's wrong with your database files (I'm not sure I have any other suggestions at this point -- I'm hoping one of the Logos developers sees this thread and pipes in) or try reinstalling 4.0a, or try upgrading to the beta and see if that fixes the problem. Note that if the beta doesn't fix the problem and you end up not being happy using the beta, there is no way to go back to 4.0a SR-3 at that point other than deleting the beta and reinstalling the stable released version from scratch.

The exact same thing happens to me! BWS causes a grey screen but the OS is still working in the background. I have to press the power button which properly shuts the computer down.

Correct, I can see the WBS window continue to fill-up with the information it is retreiving but the screen is grayed out and I receive a window informing that Logos 4 is not working. I do get a button to close down program though. Sometimes it makes you feel better to know your not alone. However, in this case I am not sure.[:)]

Just so you know, it took me 9 days to get a reply back from Support to an email I sent. In their response, once they got back to me, they told me I would have gotten a faster response if I'd called. I know the wait times on the phone are slower than normal right now because of the number of people who've been upgrading (twice as many as they expected); CEO Bob Pritchett is aware of that problem and is on his way to fixing it as we speak (just hired a new customer service rep and working on getting more). But if you don't mind waiting on hold for 20-30 minutes, you'll get a very good answer and be able to talk in real time with someone, rather than waiting for an email and having to wait again for another reply if that doesn't finally solve your issue.

From everything I can discern from Internet search this is not a good problem:

System.Data.SQLite.SQLiteException: The database disk image is malformed

In most cases the solution is to save the data somewhere else and create a new database instance then reload the data. Basicaly this means delete application and then reinstall. I am preparing for the worst based on input from Logos supports response.

Rosie, thanks for your input and follow-up. I am aware of the time factor involved in using email support. The BWS is a feature I can live without for whatever time it takes.

For everyone that were involved in this issues and wanted to get inforamtion to how to fix it, I am posting the results.

Logos Support, after exchanging several emails, did not have a fix or relate to me how this occured. At first they pointed ot a memory issue but the "database disk image malformed" error does not appear to be caused by a memory crash. And as mentioned in earlier posts the WBS worked perfectly for over two months with out issue on the same computer under the same conditions.

So we uninstalled and the installed Logos 4 and it now works as intended again, issue resolved. It only took a couple of hours for Logos (Scholar Silver Edition) to install and index. I was pleased with that. The interesting thing is that when I uninstalled Logos 4 I also had to delete the Logos 4 folder from my hard drive. After installation my notes and other custom settings returned. This leads me to belive that notes and settings are n a diffenert place rather than the Logos 4 folder or that they are being saved under my account on Logos 4 server????? This information had to come from somewhere.

Even though email response is slow, I wnat to thank support (especially Tammy) for their help and successful resolution.

Yes, all your notes and settings and layouts and other user-generated stuff is saved in the "cloud" (on the Logos servers). It is being synched whenever you see the synch arrows in the upper right corner spinning:
