John Goldingay and C.S. Lewis

One of the L7 library packages I purchased included the series "Old Testament for Everyone". As I began reading "Genesis Part 1", I encountered the work of John Goldingay for the first time, and although I knew I had never heard him speak nor read any of his works, I immediately felt a very pleasant and comfortable sense of familiarity with him as well as having the sense that I was "hearing" him rather than "reading" him. More like having a warm conversation than a textual reading.

I was puzzled for a while, wondering how it was that his writing seemed so warm, familiar and easy to relate to, when it dawned on me--it was the same way I felt when reading C. S. Lewis. In fact it felt very much like I was reading C. S. Lewis.

I also picked up a few of Goldingay's other works with my L7 library purchases and am very much looking forward to spending some time with them.

Personally his OT for everyone are so, so. Only a few stand out. I like his work on OT Theology better.

Guess I won't have an opinion on that until I get more into them. On the bright side, if I do like his OT work and his Theology work is even better, I'll have something to look forward to. [:)]

Goldingay is a gifted communicator (as was Lewis), and he has quite a good handle on the OT.

It would not be fair to expect his "OT For Everyone" commentaries to provide any depth: that's not their purpose or audience. But I do find them useful at times because of what he chooses to focus on and how he translates that to our time.

His more in-depth commentaries on the prophets are very good too, especially on Isaiah (ICC and UBCS) and Daniel (WBC). I rate them as 4-star.
