Best Beta Practice

In previous beta cycles, I kept two versions of Logos on my system, the beta and the production release. I recall it was a bit of a pain to keep both synced up. For those of you who are in the beta cycle and use a single machine, how do you configure your system to run both versions of Logos? What is the ideal configuration?

There are two options:

Run the beta and stable releases in separate user accounts.
Or run a beta version of Logos and a stable version of Verbum (or vice versa).

Either way you'll need double the disk space of one installation.

Personally, I just run the beta, but I know that if things go pear-shaped then I have access to a laptop with the stable version. It's incredibly rare I need that, though.

Yep! That's my tactic as well. Seeing as I keep an eye on the Logos 7 forum I tend not to miss the updates to the stable version. Having sitting beside me does help with answering questions in the appropriate forum.

That is my practice, but I do have 2 backups. I have Mac OS 10.12.1 with a TimeMachine backup HD which might allow me to back up to the last stable version—It did work once a few years back. More than that I have Parallels with a Windows 7 Logos installation which I should update more often. This combination has served me well. So far, I have never needed the Windows backup.

Wow....I'm floored that others are running the beta alone on their working machines. This is the seocnd time I've lost a day to something going wrong with a beta. The last time, I did something dumb and got to redownload and reindex everything. Like Jack, I do have a local clone of my HD and if I was really desparate I could bring that over (I assume / hope / trust). All of this is somewhat anxienty producing since I preach every week along with various ongoing studies and groups. This problem was particularily poorly timed coming on Friday. I had always assumed my tendencey to jump into the beta cycle at the slightest incitement (the morph query this time) reflected a character flaw on my part.

I do have stable and beta accounts on the same system - but it is a long time since I have used the stable system for anything other than to keep it updated (and I probably ought to get round to updating it again!)

+1 for beta and stable on one computer with stable that has not been updated for many weeks. Thankful for stable on a MacBook Air that goes with me to Bible studies.

I been running the beta and only the beta for years. Over that time I have had to do a complete reinstall 3 times. Running the beta you lose tech support, but reporting the issues in the beta forum has yielded great support so I made the decision to only run the beta program and so far it's mostly 99% worked.

+1 [Y] Thanks. Downloaded Verbum 7 Stable installer followed by using scan command to copy resources from Logos 7.3 Beta 4 into Verbum 7.2 SR-1 (have Automatically Download Updates set to No).

I run Verbum beta and Logos stable. I would run both anyway because of their differences so I can do screen shots for the forums. Only once has the beta been dead in the water and I had to depend on Logos until the next beta release. I've not had serious data corruption that I recall.

Well - as it happens my Beta is 'Dead in the Water' to for all practical purposes.

As soon as I open the RCL from the home page the memory used shoots up and seconds later I am forced to quit.

The practice of keeping a stable version on my Laptop is now paying dividends.

For a Minister (either lay or stipendiary) wishing to act in a professional manner installations on two different machines would seem to be the minimum safeguard for disaster recovery.

I have posted details of the bug elsewhere - I mention it here as a warning that things do go wrong if you play with development versions.

Only from the point of view of professional (professional; as in competent and wise) working.

Ones core systems need a bit of redundancy built in. The first job I gave a new Session Clerk (chairman of the board etc) was to prepare a service that they could lead in the event of my falling pray to a mishap or illness at short notice. They were told to keep it in their jacket pocket.

We are playing with Beta software but it is not only software that fails and lets us down.

I am reasonably confident that two installations on my Mac would not interact even in the same user space but I would be less confident were I be to be using the windows software that I used last time I owned such a machine.

So the short answer is 'belt and braces' if you want to guarantee no embarrassment.

If having two machines is a luxury then two user accounts on the one machine (Windows) is sufficiently reliable and practical e.g. when I'm travelling.
