Suggestion: Morph Query on Textual Variants

It would be a great feature if the Morph Query permitted the option to search on textual variants. It would be very helpful to consider all the permutations of grammar that the variants introduce in the Greek and Hebrew Bible. The SBL Greek New Testament differs at a number of points from the more widely used Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament.

I would envision adding a dropdown in the interface where "Surface" appears, giving the following choices:

I am in favor of what you are asking for, but I think the solution would be to add morphology tagging to the critical apparatus, which is a separate resource. The SBL Greek NT (or the NA28, for that matter) does not actually contain the variants in it. Rather, it has links to where the variant is located in the separate resource containing the apparatus. Once morphology tagging is added, I would think the search you would run would be on surface text in the apparatus. You would not actually search the Greek NT itself for variants. If you wanted to search both, you could create a collection and run the search that way, but I would still think surface text alone should work.

What I am asking for is not to actually search every permutation of variant readings in individual manuscripts (though that would be awesome). I realize that would require the Nestle-Aland critical aparatus (which I have). The SBL Greek New Testament makes a few hundred decisions between various other eclectic editions of the Greek New Testament (Westcott-Hort, Nestle-Aland 28, Robinson-Pierpont, etc.). In the regular Bible and Morphological search commands, I can select various fields to search on, including the Variant Reading and Variation Unit search field. I just want that search capability to be extended to the Morph Query Editor.

I have read your post several times, and I may be misunderstanding you, but it still sounds like in order for what you are asking for to work, morphology tagging would have to be added to the critical apparatus. I am only on my phone at the moment, but by selecting a random word or two in the app and selecting "info," it does not appear that the SBL Greek NT currently has been tagged. It is ultimately a question for Faithlife, though I still am in favor of it (even if apparently I am misunderstanding you!) [:)]

The surface text of the SBLGNT is morphologically tagged, but the apparatus is not. So you are right that to fully use the benefits of the Morph Query Editor, the apparatus words would also need to be morphologically tagged. So perhaps I am asking for too much. However, a lot could be done with the present text if a search term could optionally include words within the apparatus.

The question arose because the Nestle-Aland text is not available for searching with the MQE. Hopefully it will be when this feature gets out of beta.

The Variant Reading and Variation Unit search fields are part of the surface text, so you really want

Surface
Variants ---> which is a tick box

Then you can search for lemmas, surface text, morphology (nouns, verbs, etc.) that are Variants (if ticked).
