Base Packages vs. Library + Logos Now

Greetings,

In reading the product descriptions at the Logos website and several of the helpful topics in this forum, here's the relationship between base packages and Logos Now as near as I can tell:

Base Package = Library + Feature Set (Full)

Logos Now = Feature Set (Extended) + some other perks

Are these relationships correct? If so, why purchase a Base Package?

In other words, would it make more sense to purchase a Library and Logos Now, instead of a Base Package? (Essentially, own the library and rent the software)

You could also purchase a Base Package without the Feature Set. This provides a steep discount on library resources. Base Package with Feature Set is for those with a desire for ownership. If you should discontinue Now membership, you would still own the features.

Thanks for your reply, Jack. I looked around for this and I see where Feature Only sets can be purchased ( https://www.logos.com/basepackages#features ) but I did not find where Base Packages could be purchased without Features.

From what I could tell, what makes a Base Package a "package" is that it includes both a Library and a Full Feature Set.

I did notice that If I add a Base Package to my cart, the Library and Feature Set are listed as two separate items. The Feature set can then be removed, leaving only the Library. Then I can add Logos Now which would bring with it the Logos Now feature set (presumably the Extended Feature Set).

Does this make sense?

Without the FS, it is a package of resources only.

Yes, that makes sense. You would then own the resources and be renting (dirty work for some) the features. Also Now gives you access to some features that are not included in the Full Feature Set ownership model.

Here is my take on things Scott

Minimal and Free - Logos (engine) + Basic (resources).

Extended and Rented - Logos (engine) + Logos Now* (added features) + Basic (minimum resources)

*Logos Now can be changed for the lesser 'Full Feature Set' that costs a lot and doesn't provide as much.

You add Base Packages to the above because they facilitate opening the references that you find in the books you really want to study. Base packages, although they appear expensive are a lower cost way of adding large numbers of primary sources to your library.

You add individual resources* to your mix because these are the books you really want, their usefulness is likely to be enhanced if you have an extensive base package.

* It is always worth checking to see if an individual resource that you want is included in a base package before buying it as a one off.

The terminology changed when Logos 7 was released, and I'm afraid Jack is finding that old habits die hard [:)]. So he isn't correct when he says you can purchase a Base Package without a Feature Set. You are correct when you say that a Base Package = a Library + a feature set. So if you buy a Base Package without a Feature Set, that's called a Library.

That depends on your preferences.

For a new customer considering Silver, purchasing the Library and Feature Set would cost $999.99, whereas the Library on its own is only $550. If Logos Now remains at $99.99, it would be four and a half years before you'd save any money by purchasing the Feature Set. That's a long time, and if I was a new customer, I'm sure I'd go down the Logos Now route. But you must know that once you choose that route, you're effectively locked in as long as you use the software. Losing the Features makes your library far less useful, and buying them later on would cost you $600.

Logos Now option:

Good:

Future new features are included — you won't have to pay to upgrade to new features in the future.
Saves a lot of money at purchase time.

Bad:

You're locked in to paying the annual charge forever (unless you spend a lot of money buying the feature set in the future). If you ever stop paying you lose nearly all the usefulness of Logos.

Full purchase option:

Good

You can keep the features you have forever.
There's no more to pay.
Is cheaper over the long-term (5 years+).
You'll still get free updates to keep your software working in the future.

You'll have to pay for future Feature Sets if you want those features. And you probably won't be able to get those features until Logos 8 is released, probably around November 2018.
Much higher up-front cost.

By the way, for existing customers considering upgrading the maths is quite different. Lots of us on the forums already have lots of the Features, because we've bought Logos 4, 5, or 6 (before Logos Now was available). That means buying the Logos 7 feature set is a lot cheaper for us, that's prompted many existing users to purchase the Feature Set, although many more (including me) subscribe to Logos Now.

But for new users, I think it makes sense to get Logos Now plus a Library, unless you really don't want to get locked into the annual charge and are prepared to pay $450 for the privilege.

For me, the combo that makes the most sense is a Gold Library + Logos Now. I'll be changing over from Logos Cloud.

I wish I understood all this when I made my first Logos purchases. I had bought an L6 Starter package, then bought a crossgrade to get the full features, when I could have merely subscribed to Logos Now for less!
