Gold or Silver plus WBC

Hello!

If you had a budget of around $900, would you get either:

  1. Logos Gold plus Now
  2. Logos Silver plus Now plus Word Biblical Commentary set (on sale for $400)

This is my dilemma. (the costs above are with academic discount as I'm studying for an MA in Theology, for those wondering)

It seems that the WBC is a highly rated set and this sale is rather good and rare. Would it be worth getting it with Silver, or are the extras in Gold worth more, in your opinion?

Does what I'm asking even make sense? haha. Thanks for your time.

I'd go with option 2, personally, but in the end it's a personal choice. Most people have communicated that they find better value in starting with a smaller base package and customizing it from there. Make sure you get the Full Feature Set at some point if not now, but if you like WBC, get it while the price is good.

    Gary,

I went back and looked at the two packages again. In my opinion, if you know for sure you will want the WBC, then get it now. That is an incredible price and it might not ever come back around. Furthermore, in looking at the additional commentaries you will get in Gold, they aren't bad, but I don't believe they compare to the value of the WBC. Therefore, I would advise you to take option 2.

One other note, make sure you check the offerings in the tradition specific packages (Baptist, Reformed, etc.) There can be significant differences in resources there for comparable dollars. Focus on the commentary, original language, and theological resources offered. This is another way to make sure you get the most helpful resources for your $900.

Since WBC is on sale, I would go with that over Gold, with a view to getting Gold in the future.

Gold contains these significant resources that Silver doesn't

    • New International Greek Testament Commentary (NIGTC)
    • Pillar New Testament Commentary (2014)
    • The Bible Speaks Today: New Testament (22 vols.)
    • Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
    • Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary (6 vols.)

---which I think you'll eventually want.  But WBC has more OT commentaries than the commentary series above do, so it will give you better coverage.  However, many of the best NT commentaries are in the NIGTC and Pillar series, so that's why you will want to get them eventually.

Have you considered Logos Now? You could save a little on either library, as well as not having to buy a feature set.

Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

Get LN first so you get the discounts and feature sets.

If become a Logos Now member soon (before 22 May), then could use $ 50 coupon code toward WBC purchase => 2 Extra Logos Now perks for May

Totally forgot about that perk! Thanks for pointing out that additional savings opportunity!

I personally would go for the WBC and silver - The advice above is good. You can always come back and buy the gold add on later for only a few bucks extra (from the Gold-Silver price).  I do like WBC and I'm using some of them very often.

I would certainly go with option # 2, and get the Word Biblical commentary.  It is one of the best sets, and worth far more than Logos now.

I have Logos Now, and almost never use the extras it provides.  The books, especially solid commentaries, are where you build value in you library.  But then, I am old school.

I'd pass on Logos Now if I were you, unnecessary. Can you get the WBC on sale now and then save up for Gold?  If you need to use the WBC commentaries before you can get Gold you can use them with Logos Basic. I'm in school too and I think you need at least Gold. Especially if you're going to be taking a preaching class/writing sermons. That's where Logos really shines, and you'll want to have those extra commentaries.

Gold + WBC on a payment plan. [:)]

I'm not a fan of Now. I understand why FL is trying to go this direction, but I wish they would stay away from the subscription model. I want to own my resources and the software.

I believe LN is a short term advantage because of the discounts, coupons, and features for people on a budget. Purchase is best for those who can afford it. The $50 coupon and discounts seal it for me. Get some prices from a sales rep.

I would go for Gold plus WBC.  Now is ok, but like others, I hardly ever use ALL the features.  I went ahead and own whatever is available.  Logos Now is good because you get small perks here and there.  The most recent one was $50 off a $100 purchase or more.  Others are discounts on monthly resources available for preview as a Logos now member (so far I have not been interested in any resources); but in the end, it will be your decision.  As others have pointed out, Gold has a more robust commentary repertoire and to add WBC to that would be very helpful indeed.  But is up to you.

Note: I could be wrong, but you cannot combine Logos Now discount with Academic discount -- it's either or.  The academic discount is the deeper discount any way.  Maybe others can comment on this.

You are correct DAL. Logos will apply the biggest discount in your cart, usually for me that's my Academic discount unless Logos is having a really good sale on something.  According to what a Logos employee told me, I could stack my Academic discount on top of the Now discount when purchasing a new base package (I don't know if that's just for a first time purchase or for every purchase of a base package).  But you cannot stack discounts for books and other resources.

I had Logos Now free for a year last year, and there was only 1 preview resource that I ended up wanting to purchase. It was great to preview the latest features, but I now have most of those feature since I upgraded to Logos 7. When I check the Logos preview resources and early release features page now, it doesn't look like there is much interesting going on there.

Don't forget your original language resources NA28 etc along with up to date Lexicons such as BDAG and Halot

Gold and Silver do not contain these.

I'd go with Silver & WBC. You aren't going to get everything full out. You can add Gold later and whatever else you need like the lexicons.

Don't worry about what you don't have. Use what you do have. It really takes most folks awhile to get their base library with all the stuff together.
