This is a question that is addressed to Morris Proctor or anyone else that can show me the way to find every old testament reference whether direct or indirect that points to Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

It would be great if Logos 7 users would be able to find it in the tools menu to expedite the search.

If we don't have it yet, I would like to suggest to the Logos Team to make it possible in future Logos versions.

It is that important.

Thank you,

Joseph

    [one] the way to find [nearly]every old testament reference whether direct or indirect that points to Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

    I used the Sermon Starter Guide on Jesus, and under the section of Thematic Outlines, and then under the heading "the Coming of Messiah", and also the heading "Jesus, the Christ".

       Coming of Messiah

    Synopsis

    The coming of a figure chosen and anointed by God to deliver and redeem his people. Anointing was seen as a sign of being chosen by God for a special task of leadership or responsibility. The OT looked ahead to the final coming of such a figure to usher in a new era in the history of the people of God; the NT sees this expectation fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

    Anointing as a sign of being chosen by God

    Anointing with oil

And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

    2 Samuel 2:4 (ESV) — 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”

    2 Kings 9:6 (ESV) — 6 So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel.

    Judges 3:10 (ESV) — 10 The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

    See also Is 49:1–6; Is 50:4–9; Is 52:13–53:12

    Isaiah 49:1–6 (ESV) — 1 Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” 4 But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense with my God.” 5 And now the Lord says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— 6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

    Isaiah 50:4–9 (ESV) — 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. 6 I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. 7 But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. 8 He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. 9 Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.

    Isaiah 52:13–53:12 (ESV) — 13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. 14 As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind— 15 so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand. 1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

    Thank you for the example and for the time spent in showing me how to do it, but when I went to Search in All Bible Text in all Passages, I couldn't find "Bible Compare English."

     The only thing I came up with was the AMP (4 Bibles with Bible Compare), but nothing like the graph you showed.

    It's amazing what you did and I thank you for the great effort made, but I was looking for logos to show me the "how to do it myself" way and simply find all OT verses that point to Christ, directly or indirectly.

    Thank you, [:)]

    Thank you, but HOW did you do it? Where did you go and what kind of resource did you use to get it?

    Can I find it in "Search" by using a particular formula?

    Someone else gave me the formula: {Section <PreachingTheme = Prophecy: Jesus>} , but I saw some verses that have nothing to do with the prophecies that pointed to Jesus as the future Messiah,

    For instance, this particular search showed Gen 3:9-24 while Gen 3:15 should have been sufficient. After that, it should have jumped to the next prophetic verse that promises a Messiah. Then it showed Gen 12:1-9 while Gen 12:1-3 should have been enough, and so on...

    I hope there is an easier way because this particular search was not basic enough.

    Thank you,

    Joseph

    Thank you for the example and for the time spent in showing me how to do it, but when I went to Search in All Bible Text in all Passages, I couldn't find "Bible Compare English."

    This is just a collection of bibles KS4J used - you may easily use "all open bibles" or the one you like most (such as NIV) - I used "all bibles" for testing and it got me a six-digit number of hits - not something helpful.

    The point is that Preaching Themes data are not (or: no longer) linked to individual verses, but to pericopes or chapters, thus this result is unavoidable when using the preaching themes data.

  • Thank you for the example and for the time spent in showing me how to do it, but when I went to Search in All Bible Text in all Passages, I couldn't find "Bible Compare English."

    Bible Compare English is a collection of 11 Bibles with Reverse Interlinear resources that have been enabled for Text Comparison Interlinear in the New Testament:

    Interlinear comparison uses reverse interlinear lemma tagging for comparing translations.

    FYI: added HCSB to my "Bible Compare English" collection before replying. Earlier screen shot in this had 10 Bibles in "Bible Compare English" collection.

    A search idea is Preaching Theme that finds prophecy with contextual verses:

    {Section <PreachingTheme = Prophecy: Jesus>}

    One Search refinement is intersection with New Testament usage:

    ({Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Citation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Quotation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Allusion"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Echo"}) INTERSECTS {Section <PreachingTheme = Prophecy: Jesus>}

    Using OR for Intertext labels allows search results to have a different color for each relationship.

    Logos Help has Intertext label information:

    One more search refinement is intersection with another Preaching Theme:

    ({Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Citation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Quotation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Allusion"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Echo"}) INTERSECTS {Section <PreachingTheme = Prophecy: Jesus>} INTERSECTS {Section <PreachingTheme Jesus: Humanity>}

    Right click in Genesis 3:15 shows pericope has many Preaching Themes.
