Is Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR) and Logos dead? You can't even purchase the back issues any longer. I also had hoped that the imagery would be tagged for use in L4, though I appreciate this would be a large task!
Hi Donovan! Yes, I'm afraid for the time being, it is probably dead as far as I have heard (although insiders of both companies would obviously know more than me). The problem seems to be that Biblical Archaeology Review has set up a way to access back issues (through a subscription fee) on their website, and I'm sure that they want to promote this side of their business, especially as so MANY magazines are going under. They actually have a fairly rich website of materials, beyond the magazine themselves... much of it free. They have said that they can't afford to reproduce the CDs (and hence a new Logos collection), although I really think the true reason is the marketing decision described above.
I am saddened by this too, as I'd love for them to update the collection, as it had stopped at 2005. But I wish them well in their struggle to stay afloat and support their decision to market through their own site if they choose. I wouldn't think it had to be an either/or thing, but.... Maybe they want to be sure that their own site catches on sufficiently first before opening things up too much to other resellers. I guess that makes sense. I'm a bit afraid that they may one day discontinue the print edition in favor of an electronic format (such as Discipleship Journal and Pray! did, much to my sorrow)... the website format seems to me to be a forerunner of that, but that is just a wild guess. One day it is probably inevitable.
All of that said, I should add that I had a problem with my Logos back issue collection. I had purchased it when it first came out. Logos showed on the website that I owned it (the option to purchase it was grayed out)... and I therefore never realized that the CD had been upgraded (there hadn't been an "upgrade" option through Logos... the one being offered just included additional volumes than it originally did), adding issues up to 2005. So unbeknownst to me, my edition stopped at 2001 and I was unaware that I could have received others. Then it was discontinued through Logos, and I couldn't get it fixed when I found out that I was missing 5 years of back issues. I was bummed out about this as I owned every physical issue since the magazine's inception and had disposed of them once I received the CD. I contacted Logos and they apologized... its a problem in their system that apparently affects a number of works... but there wasn't anything they could do as they don't hold the license. SO on a whim I contacted BAR and explained the situation... and without my asking, they sent out a complete CD (through 2005) for free! I was asking to PAY for the upgraded version. SO I was really pleased with them for that.
I wonder if when their website is going if Galaxie could publish it just like journals? I may be showing my ignorance here in regard to electronic publishing...

The BAR resources on Logos are some of my favorites. Hopefully someday in the future, the relationship will be renewed.
Last July I emailed BAR and asked them about updating their CD archive which currently ends at 2005. This was the response I received:
Dear Mr. Quick,Unfortunately, although we would like to update the Archives for a CD-Rom, we are at a point where the economic conditions prevent us from following through on this project at this time.We have had to focus on the online Library and we also have the digital editions of BAR from 2011 that have taken priority for this year.We are hoping that conditions improve for 2012 and that we can find an alternative for the Archive CDs updates. If you can give me a call after the start of the New Year, I might have some updates on this project. Is Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR) and Logos dead?
This is a very old thread. But I am wondering if (hoping that) BAR can return to Logos

No, it won’t. At least not any time soon.

No, it won’t. At least not any time soon. DAL
Why is that, DAL? You have some inside information?
Hershel Shanks recently retired as editor, so maybe something might change. Probably more wishful thinking than anything else.
