FRUSTRATED with Logos wasting my computer cycles

When I open Factbook, I can't get it to STOP rebuilding the last accessed entry so that it will take the already excessive time to build the drop down menu for what I really want to see. I often have 2-5 minutes delay building the stupid dropdown even though I know the precise term I want. If indexing or other processing is occuring it can be 10-15 minutes as tonight. Yes, there is a way around it - if I go through the right click menu none of this wasted time occurs. PLEASE allow the attempt to change the Factbook entry STOP the processing of the current, unwanted entry.

I totally agree with this complaint. It's very frustrating.

Do you have really huge library, or really old computer? My computer takes seconds to build the factbook. The dropdown is pretty fast when I'm typing in the box, pretty much instant. I'm just curious what could be causing it to take so long for your factbook to load.

No, the computer is not particularly old. Yes, the library is large and diverse. But, no, I've not been able to track down why the pick lists take so long to populate ... although I observe that a single word entry is much faster than a multi-part one.

I also don't have this issue... my library is 7000+ resources. The pick list for Factbook populates in less than a second. Running Windows 10.

Frustrating. Please have a look at your logfiles. I have a workspace on Mac where I can run and see these files "live" so I can see what Logos is doing.

A few weeks ago I noticed in the logs that I had some errors in Collections and in some Visual Filters (even when set off) while populating Factbook or another feature. I repaired these errors and Logos runs fine now.

I just timed mine and it took two seconds to populate everything but the media which was finished after 8 seconds. I'm also running the beta. Mine's a 3.5 year old laptop but I do have an SSD and lots of RAM.

It definitely sounds like you computer has some kind of corrupted data issue rather than just Logos being slow if it's taking several minutes.

    Okay folks, the facts:

    • this occurs only with Logos/Verbum ... all other software behaves appropriately
    • this has occurred since the initial install on new equipment
    • I have multiple installations (Logos usually beta, Verbum usually stable); all installations behave the same
    • I have tried reinstalling without any change in behavior
    • I do not have SSD
    • My graphics card appears to be insufficient for top performance given the frequency of disappearance/repaint behavior (not common but ...)
    • My "best guess" as to when the freeze occurs is when temporary strings are being merged ... in whatever form Logos does that task; my secondly most probable culprit is when strings are being written to disk,
    • Early on, I tried to work with Logos on identifying the problem ... but the video for documenting the problem was too long to send over my less than ideal rural connection.
    • I am not the only person with the problem - I suspect it is a configuration issue based upon my perception of the frequency and diversity of people experiencing it
    • I realize that I could minimize the problem quickly by (a) quit purchasing new resources from Faithlife (b) canceling all pre-pub orders and (c) turning off auto-update. I have freely, with full knowledge, chosen not to apply this solution.

Asking Logos to not waste time building unwanted data is a step that should help everyone for whom this is a problem - even if we have very different causes.

    MJ,

I'm sorry you are having this performance issue. How many resources do you have in your library? It would help in confirming some results from my attempts to reproduce this performance issue.

46,835 ... note that this includes both Text Partnership bundles and Perseus ... My basic Verbum/Logos library collection is 14,141

I've the same experience MJ describes.  The previous entry in Factbook rebuilds and there seems no obvious way of stopping it. This delays using Factbook for any new search.  A solution would be welcome.  Currently my Logos library is around 11000+ and I'm using a PC running Windows 10 which is working well.  Keep well  Paul

One thing I have observed is that the Factbook is very slow in doing this the first time I open it in a session. If I close the Factbook then reopen, it responds much more quickly for the following look-ups.

I did it again with a cleaner load (not having had Logos running for hours already) and got a smaller log file. It seemed to hang partway through populating the Factbook when I first opened it (the progress bar froze). After waiting 30 seconds or so, I left and went off and did other things for a couple of minutes and came back and it was done. I looked through the log file and found lots of Errors that I couldn't account for (some of these had multiple copies of each error):

    Error GuidedLearningManager Couldn't update templates.

    Error SqliteNotesClientRepository Unable to convert text range Faithlife.NotesApi.Core.TextRangeRequest: {"code":"NotFound","message":"A text range at indexed offset '78379' was not found in resource LLS:6.50.5."}

Error MethodBehaviorConverter Type 'ResourceBatchEditorViewModel' has no matching method 'CancelRemovalOfSelectedResources'.

Error ApplicationUtility Exception loading ContentsEntry from string: strReference=[Article=R1|ArticleLength=3|Context=%20%20%0a|Offset=0|OffsetInContext=0|Resource=LLS:9781441240439|Version=2012-09-10T20:57:28Z], resourceId=[LLS:9781441240439] ~FormatException: Unable to load contents entry for resource: LLS:9781441240439, parameters: Article=R1|ArticleLength=3|Context=%20%20%0a|Offset=0|OffsetInContext=0|Resource=LLS:9781441240439|Version=2012-09-10T20:57:28Z

Error GoogleAnalyticsClient Failed to submit event: System.Net.WebException: The remote name could not be resolved: 'ssl.google-analytics.com'

Error TextBlockUtility TextBlockUtility.IsTextTrimmed breaks Text bindings; use TextBlockUtility.BindableText instead.

Here's the log file this time: 3323.Logos.log

This is actually one of the most annoying things when working with Logos. Fixing it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Annoying Factbook workaround is a shortcut that has a smallish set of results.

Related annoyance is opening a New Search using "+" that runs previous search.

Third annoyance is persistence of automated search assistant providing suggestions AFTER search is already done (with assistant pop-up reappearing after changing tab focus).

Personally dreaming of a Program Setting so could turn off/on automatic search assistance as desired. Also would appreciate option to turn off/on run previous search when new tab is opened. Both of these settings would usually be off for me (since have memorized search syntax for many items). Search assistance for choosing original language lemma's and roots can be useful.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

Using the Go Box and typing (no quotes) "factbook to <partial-subject>" is a bit of a workaround for those who dont need to see the full dropdown list, or have the Factbook in a layout, as the Go Box will also show the top 5 Factbook items parsed from <partial-subject>. MIght save a few minutes.

    Rosie,

I don't have any updates this getting fixed, but I have brought it to the team's attention again.
