Bug in Text Comparison?

I just found out that the Text Comparison tool only runs when you are online.
But online, then there are still a few issues.

I'm trying to compare NA28 with Elzevir for a certain passage, but:

I can only compare both in the verses display
in the interlinear display only NA28 shows up

When I try to compare NA28 with UBS5:

I can display both in the verses display
but the interlinear display - after a lot of calculating - simply says: 'There are no results for this reference ... (e.g. Lk 4:16-30)

Any input?

I just found out that the Text Comparison tool only runs when you are online.

I started to reply but then realised I had no idea whether you were referring to Windows/MacOS or iOS/Android or even the Web version.

If the latter then you are definitely correct.

To get an apposite answer for the other two you will need to be a little more specific.

Perhaps you might consider asking the question in the appropriate forum?

Hi Michael.

I don't know all the answers to your questions, but I have some information that'll probably help.

First issue: Only certain translations and editions have been curated for inclusion in the Interlinear View of Text Comparison. It is New Testament only, and pretty much restricted to translations that have reverse interlinears. Second issue: My guess is that for the interlinear comparison, NA28 and UBS5 are considered equivalent editions.** The normal ("Verse") text comparison uses a modified diff algorithm, so it can pretty much handle whatever translations are thrown at it. But the Interlinear View requires curated information. On my installation, when I did the comparison you indicated, I only ended up with an NA28 line (as UBS5 is, I'm deducing, equivalent and not supported). I did not end up with the "no results" message.

Does that message persist today, or are your results different? I'll file a report, but if the message goes away, can you reply to this thread?

** We do have metadata in resources that specifies this; for example there are myriad editions of NA26, NA27, UBS3, and UBS4. This metadata helps constrain the display to one edition rather than duplicating several with the same information.

This is expected, currently the interlinear setting only works with the NA28, NA27, SBLGNT, and Scrivener 1881.

I cannot reproduce this. When I use the NA28 and UBS5 with Luke 4:16-30 I get results for the NA28, as mentioned above it does not work with the UBS5. Is this still not working? Can you provide a screenshot if this is still not working? I'm using 7.17 on Windows to reproduce.

That explains my issues. I really hope that more Greek texts follow soon (Westcott/Hort, Tischendorf, Elzevir, Codex Bezae, Codex Sinaiticus, etc.), since that makes text critical comparison much easier.

Maybe the documentation raises too much expectations with regard to text critical comparison:

"Usage
There are several ways to use the Text Comparison dataset:
• Compare similarities and differences across Bible translations.
• Compare similarities and differences across original language manuscripts.
• Compare which Bible translations line up with which original language manuscripts."

But I'm glad it's not a bug and I'm glad future will add more resources.
