Is there a way, in Logos 6, to narrow a search down to every occurrence of a citation/allusion of a particular OT book in the NT? For example, can I search for every occurrence of a citation/allusion from Hosea in the NT?

Hello, John!

I don’t know about finding them with L6 but I have a resource that does exactly what you’re wanting except I don’t know how I got it because I can’t find it on the website.

EDIT: It appears it's in all base packages but not available separately. And don't forget the Index of Scripture and Other Ancient Writings in the back of Beale, G. K., & Carson, D. A. (2007). Commentary on the New Testament use of the Old Testament. Grand Rapids, MI;  Nottingham, UK: Baker Academic;  Apollos.

Jones, D. A. (2009). Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.

The HCSB has OT Quotations in the NT tagged and indexed. That allows you to search for specific words an phrases just in the OT quotes. It unfortunately does not let you search the cited scripture references just in those quotes. You can search footnotes for scripture references, but that would be all footnotes to say, Hosea, rather than just those that are OT quotes.

So Scott's two suggestions (plus one) are all I know to do as well. Besides Jone's work there is another by Philipps entitled Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament. By the title you can tell this focuses just on quotes rather than quotes and allusions. For Hosea there are 9 hits with just 5 different verses of Hosea quoted.

Read https://community.logos.com/forums/p/94264/654763.aspx for some ideas on a related issue or https://community.logos.com/forums/p/98879/682754.aspx which is a closer fit. One may use the Passage List as a filtering device for search results.

Nestle Aland 28 brings up the marginal cross references when you hover on the asterisks. A double click keeps  the popup visible.

The HCSB has OT Quotations in the NT tagged and indexed.

The HCSB misses some of them. The NET Bible notes them in footnotes, and usually includes the words "quotation from Hos" or at least "quotation" AND "from Hos" whenever there's a quotation from Hosea, but it's not foolproof. However you can find some of these by doing this kind of search:

Note that there appear to be some bugs in these search results, because none of the footnotes for 1 Pe 2:6 in the NET Bible mention Hos, but footnote 29 in 1 Pe 2:10 (which was not found in my Search) does mention both quotations and "from Hosea" (I had "Match all word forms" on, so quotation should have matched quotations). I don't know what gives.

The Ro 9:7 search hit is also a puzzlement, as there is no mention of Hos in any of its footnotes, nor in those of nearby verses.

1 Cor 15:45 also looks erroneous in the search hits. There is no mention of Hos in the footnote of that verse, but rather the footnote for 1 Cor 15:55 indicates that this is a quote from Hosea:

The other search hits do seem to be accurate.

The results reflect your query  i.e.  "quotation" AND "from Hos" within the footnotes of a chapter (because it is a Basic Search). "quotation" is found  first at Ro 9:7 and continues to Ro 9:29, whilst "from hos" is found at 9:25 & 9:26.

"from hos" is more accurate, but depends on "Hos" being used for the reference. I use the datatype "from <Bible Hos>" or even "from <Hos>". The result "From 13:1 to 13:16" in the OT can be eliminated by using "Match case". And you can catch an allusion with

"from <Bible Hos>" OR "allusion to <Bible Hos>"

You can use "from <Bible Hos>" in a number of English bibles.

I haven't thought about searching footnotes before. This is great! One day I want to create a chronological Bible reading plan that would place the pericope of all passages which quote other passages immediately after reading the pericope of the original. It would take some work to type out all the references, but I think it would be a great plan! It sounds like I'd have to run a similar search with just: "from <Bible>" OR "allusion to <Bible>".

I am finding that from <Bible Hos> also picks up footnotes with the word "from" in them, with no reference to Hosea. Is that normal, or am I doing something wrong?

I didn't know the construction <Bible Hos> worked inside quotation marks. Haven't got time to verify it right now, but I'd be suspicious of it.

Put it inside quotes else it is two words rather than a phrase  i.e. "from <Bible Hos>"

Look at the bible itself, but such quotes would be part of the Heading Text. For all bible references you need  <Bible Gen-Rev> e.g.
