Is there a way to actually view these images stereoscopically? They might be interesting if viewed the way they were intended. Does anyone use these?

Yes. Some better than others. On the menu ribbon at the top of the book's window there are a range of viewing options. If you click the one that says "Normal". You will be offered a range of 3D friendly viewing option, but the one that is easiest and gives the most immediate results is the "wiggle option".
