What is it?

The New Testament Use of the Old Testament interactive lets you explore how New Testament authors cite, quote, allude to, or echo Old Testament texts. Display both Old Testament and New Testament passages in multiple versions for quick comparison—including the Hebrew or Greek Old Testament and the Greek New Testament. Find the passage you're looking for using faceted search options such as speaker, themes, events, places, or things.

How does it work?

Open the interactive from the Tools menu. Select all interactives and open the New Testament Use of the Old Testament. Data can be filtered by Type (Allusion, Citation, Echo, Quotation), Book (NT), Book (Source), Speaker (NT), Speaker (Source), Addressee (NT), Addressee (Source), Literary Types (NT), and Literary Types (Source). The data can also be sorted according to the New Testament or the Source text.

You can also compare the original languages (Greek Old Testament, Hebrew Old Testament, and Greek New Testament) to discover which text the New Testament author might have used. Identifying textual dependence is essential to understanding the original context of the source and what themes the New Testament author might have been picking up on and developing for his own context.

To discover more about the data and methodology used for the interactive, click on the About link.

    Where can I learn more?

Thanks for this feature. It is indeed useful. I do have an annoying issue with this particular resource. On my iPad I clicked the download button and got a message that says I can't download this resource without a licence. Fair enough. Do I have a licence with Logos Now? I'm not too worried one way or the other if I can't download it on my iPad. But what annoys me in a nuisance way is that every time I open Logos or Verbum on my iPad the message that I'm unable to open this resource pops up. I've tried everything I know, even uninstalling and reinstalling Logos to get rid of this annoying message. I've even looked to see if I can buy a licence just to get rid of this pop up message.

I do a lot of my preparation on my iPad so I cut and paste a lot into documents and note files. Every time I exit Logos to paste a quote in a document or note and re-open up pops this annoying message again. It is driving me nuts. Please tell me how to get rid of it or how to buy a licence so I can get rid of it.

Looks like I've got it to work, although it took some some button pressing, trial and error before I had all Greek and Hebrew visible.

Gold package, and original language material and ancient text material, SIL and UBS books, discourse Hebrew OT and Greek NT. PC with Windows 8.1

    Hi ManilaDave.

At present, this interactive is not available on mobile platforms. I'll be able to look into your issue later today.

Not to run on the iPad - these interactives are designed to work in the full Logos 6 environment

It would be ideal if they were not visible in the mobile app libraries.

I did the same thing to try and reproduce what you are describing and can confirm the behaviour you are seeing.

But as far as I can see deleting and reinstalling the app fixes it - at least I'm not getting the popup anymore (although I guess I ought to wait a bit until everything has downloaded again)

Did you completely delete the app?

And now I am getting the popup again - it would be good to know how to get rid of it!

I completely deleted the app to no avail. It's not a big issue but it is annoying. I have found the data set very useful on my desktop. The download button needs to be removed from these resources on mobile devices.

We had a setting wrong. Sorry about that. We've fixed it. It should disappear from your mobile app library next time you refresh.

Do you know what constitutes a refresh here?

While the popup seems to have disappeared the resource still shows in the library after a restart of the app and a rebuild of the index

Sorry to be late to the party. I've always loved this kind of feature ... and have now had a moment to stop and play with it!

I'm wondering if there's a typo near the end of the 'About' pane? The screenshot below shows the two detailed search syntaxes given there as examples. The first happily searches for allusions based on Source (from Isaiah). The second says that it's looking for Targets (in Hebrews). But the actual wording in the blue syntax uses the word Source – even though the correct search (still seen in the pop-up when you hover over the search string) itself correctly is exploring Target terms.

Hardly crucial ... but I'm sure there are some pedants out there who'd be happy to correct it.  Wink

I would like to suggest a find box like there is in the Bible browser to make use speedier and more convenient. It is a bit of a drag to have to expand "more" lists to find what one wants to pick. Otherwise very useful.

Yes - This would make it easier to use when working through a text - I'm reading Matthew at the moment, and selecting Matthew as the target works fine in the early chapters, but involves a lot of scrolling as you get further in.
