Temporary Licenses - Notes and Clippings Question

I think this question may have been asked previously but unfortunately I cannot locate the thread. Many apologies if I am asking a question that has been previously addressed.

If I make notes and/or clippings from a resource that has a temporary license, what happens to those notes and clippings when I no longer have access to that resource?

For example, after the resource license expires, it is still possible to view the contents of a paragraph that was 'clipped' from a resource while it was in my library?

    Anyone?

    Thanks in advance

I think I may copy the clippings to a Word document just in case [:)]

    • Clippings [Edited] - the clipping is BLANK except for the title i.e. clipped text, notes, tags are lost (I removed a permanent license to verify this).
    • Notes by reference  -  your typed text should be OK but reference link will become inactive unless unique to resource
    • Notes by selection -  I think the (partial) selected text & attachment points will be OK. Content you type will be OK. Label should be OK. Selected text can be seen in another resource with the same references (eg another bible) if you have Logos Now and the "Corresponding Notes and Highlights" filter.

You should verify Notes for yourself by temporarily hiding a resource (CTRL+Right Click in Library) with a temp license - you might also try it on resource(s) whose license is permanent.

Clippings should be fine as well, as the text is part of the saved content. Did you know you can edit the content of a clipping?

Quotes view will no longer work for Notes that are attached to a missing resource.

As Dave indicated, the best way to test is to hide a resource. This is safe to do, as none of the saved data is ever lost or deleted when a resource is not available.

I edited my post before seeing your response. The clipping is blank after the resource is removed, but is fully restored when the resource is reinstated; including my edit of the clipped text (v6.12 beta 2). This indicates there is a bug when the resource is not detected/found!

Oh, interesting. Thanks for checking that. This is intentional then, not a bug. It prevents the situation where someone collects an entire resource in clippings and then returns the resource, leaving them effectively able to read and search the document normally.

That would discriminate against someone who:

    • permanently hides a resource; or
    • transfers a resource as opposed to returning it

but had made extensive notes and tags without clipping the entire resource.

I think the benefit of doubt should be given except when returning a resource; as clippings could be removed by FL and the policy would be open/clear.

There has to be another way? If we are hiring resources and having resources for a month as part of Logos Now it is a real shame if legitimate clipping and note taking is lost.

I did some checking, and it turns out that I was wrong (again [:)] ). It is a bug that the clipping is no longer visible after you lose access to a resource. I've written up a bug report for this issue. As a workaround for now, you can view the missing clippings via https://documents.logos.com/

Thanks Dave and Andrew for your assistance and for following up this question.

I can understand the reasons why notes/clippings may be lost from Logos/Verbum temporary resources, but agree with John that it would be a shame if such note taking ability was lost.

I presently have several temporary licences in my library, which is something relatively new for me, and have been wondering what will happen to any personal research notes or clippings when the licenses expire. The notes/clippings will generally be minimal, for if the resource is one I will be likely to use a lot in the future I would prefer to purchase a permanent license.

Happy to see it is going to be possible to retain clippings, once bugs are swatted [:D]
