Okay, I knew “how” to use clippings, but I couldn’t get past the fact that there is no way to sort the clippings automatically. Sorting manually is quite a pain.

I would read through several commentaries, clipping as I went, and end up with a disorganized mess of clippings.

But today, it hit me! (Thanks to the wiki, here: https://wiki.logos.com/Clippings#Using_Find_to_locate_a_tagged_clipping)

I realized that I could use tags to sort the clippings.

Here’s how: When I add a clipping, I tag it with a tag that is helpful to my research—say, the verse number or a key word in the text…or both.

Then, when I am writing and need to recall my research, I use Find (Control-F or Command-F) to search for the tags.

Writing about 1 Kings 11:1? Find my “1 Ki 11:1” tag and only the clippings with that tag will appear.

Writing about how Solomon’s “heart was not perfect”? Use Find to find my “his heart was not perfect” tag. Only the clippings with that tag will appear.

Finally, I can use clippings and enjoy it! Just thought I’d share in case someone else might find this helpful.

Thanks Levi

I had been putting the information to find later in the notes section instead of the tags. This does make things much easier.

Great post, Levi. I enjoy clippings and also use tags to locate a topic or passage via Search

It identifies two clips within the clippings document.

Great find,

I file my research by topic in Favorites alphabetically along with there respective Clippings. Your find is simple and elegant. Thanks!

And thank you Dave for your post. Your search adds even more functionality to what Levi has drawn our attention to.

Two great candidates for M.J.'s "Tips of the Week".

This is what keeps me coming back to the forums.

Thanks again guys!

Most excellent use of search tool. Thanks for the great tip. This really opens my mind up to many search potentials I had not though about.

OK Dave, I was able to duplicate your search window.  I also visited the cited Wiki on tagging and watched the video.

If I have tagged resources, then I can use the library pane to browse my existing tag set.  But, if I tag my clippings, then how can I list my existing tags?  With my memory, I am likely to generate multiple tags for the same thing simply by changing the capitalization or adding an 's'.  So I need to be able to determine my current tag set looking for a suitable preexisting category.  I will also need memory hooks to figure out what I can search over.

Hitting a blank. Does this no longer work? Was it replaced with another search format?

EDITED: While The Ctrl-F method still works, I can't find a way to search My Tags from the selection line as shown by Dave's screenshot. Don't remember if this was ever announced - it seems to be a loss of functionality.

However, the taggings of clippings are searched and the results shown as part of the Your Documents hits in an Everything search - to replicate the search shown above, it is possible to use mytag: in the search field for the Everything search.

This will also work for the bible references automatically stored in the Clippings: searching Everything for Mytag:Jn will give all Clippings from John

No idea what invokes the spurious hits on Soundfaith, though.

A more focused way would be to use the mytag: search in an All Text All Passages search of Your Documents:

Thank you, Mick! I had looked through the help file last night searching for "tag" and "mytag" but didn't find anything about using them in a search. I can see where this is a more flexible improvement. But, Is this anywhere in Help?

I don't think so. Actually I didn't remember it myself (therefore the edit) but found this in one of MJ Smith's "TIP of the day" posts (they still are Gold!) after googling the forum for the My Tag search.

Yes.  v7.11 introduced "All Passages", but you will still find "My Tag" when you click All Text (you have to select Your Documents first).

And Logos Help should document mytag.

Under what conditions? The contents for "All Text" are incorrect here for a "Your Documents" search:

"Your Documents" also searches Your Books, so the Bible fields come from your Personal Books as well as Your Documents. I'd say that neither of these has a user tag if "My Tag" is absent from the Field list.

No. As you've seen in my mytag: search screenshot above, some of my clippings are tagged (actually it seems the automatic bible references are mytags, too), however I don't see a My tag Field in the list - could you share a screenshot how it looks on your machine?

They are and you can remove them if necessary.

My Tag can come from Documents (via Add tag) and PB's via {{field-on:mytag}}... {{field-off:mytag}}, but the other fields come from Personal Books.

Forgot about Personal Books. That makes sense. Thanks.

I tried adding tags to a number of things but it had no effect. Creating a PB with the mytag field did add "My Tag" to the menu. So "Search Fields" in "All Text" are all fields derived from the PB index.

I'll create a bug report  - removing Mytag from the one PB was enough to remove it from the list of Fields!
