Nicholas Phillips:
if I joined "Verbum Now" what do I not get access to as compared to the Verbum Portfolio package?

  • The "Verbum Portfolio package" is the purchase (ownership) of resource licenses (books).
  • The purchase of a "full feature set" is the purchase (ownership) of all current and past features (with corresponding datasets).
  • "Verbum Now" is a membership program. One of the benefits is access to all current, past & future(!) datasets (meaning that as L8 features/datasets are developed, you gain access many months in advance). Other features include access to preview resources and special discounts. A membership to "Verbum Now" will not provide you with the resources of the "Verbum Portfolio Package," which would require a large purchase investment.
  • "Verbum Cloud" is a monthly rental of resources (books). The price tiers available do not have a 1=1 correspondence with the packages for purchase.

This doesn't help at all. I see multiple terms here:

  • resources
  • features
  • datasets
  • verbum now
  • verbum cloud
  • base packages

As as a prospective new user this is all very confusing. I called the sales team last night and even asked if there was an option for a subscription instead of chunking down over a $1K, and was told , "no, we do not offer a subscription service."

So, now even more confused. Intuitively, I can understand the difference  eteeen a software "feaure" and a dataset. Where I am getting confused is the difference between a dataset and a resource, as we ask "now" bs "cloud."

Thanks!!

Nicholas Phillips:
Question: I have never owned anything related to Logos. I was looking at the Verbum Portfolio package which runs roughly $4,500.  Instead, if I joined "Verbum Now" what do I not get access to as compared to the Verbum Portfolio package? Is it strictly an "ownership" vs. "rental" thing? With a subscription to Verbum Now do you still have to buy something else to get the full access of all of the data (books, letters, etc.) of the portfolio edition?

Welcome Big Smile

Verbum Now membership => https://verbum.com/now does not include most of the library resources in Verbum Portfolio => Verbum Portfolio

Verbum Cloud has subscription levels with rental combinations of resources, datasets, and  features:

Essentials => https://verbumcloud.com/essentials

  • Verbum Cloud Essentials gives you the daily Mass readings, The Early Church Fathers, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica, the Documents of Vatican II, The Sources of Catholic Dogma, Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary, Orchard’s Catholic Commentary, the Catena Aurea, writings of St. Augustine, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Francis of Assisi, and hundreds more.

Plus => https://verbumcloud.com/plus

  • Verbum Cloud Plus gives you everything in Essentials plus The G.K. Chesterton Collection, The John Henry Newman Collection, The Complete Works of St. John of the Cross, The Great Commentary of Cornelius á Lapide, select works from St. Athanasius, St. Ephraim, St. Frances de Sales, St. Justin Martyr (Greek and English), St. Basil the Great (Greek and English), Josephus (Greek and English), grammars and lexicons for learning and researching Greek, Latin and Hebrew, and much more.
Premium => https://verbumcloud.com/premium

  • Verbum Cloud Premium gives you everything in Plus as well as select works from St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Louis de Montfort, and Thomas Merton, English and Latin text of Encyclicals and Apostolic Exhortations of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, Vatican documents on doctrine, liturgy, education, and the family, the International Critical Commentary (New Testament), Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics, works of Aristotle, Plato and other philosophers, and hundreds of other titles.

Verbum Libraries => https://verbum.com/libraries shows various resource license ownership levels. Comparison => https://verbum.com/compare shows resources with each level. Verbum Cloud subscription resources are in a variety of Verbum libraries.

Several Verbum Cloud Essential resources have resources included in every Verbum Library (Starter and higher)

Writings of St Francis of Assisi is in Verbum Silver and higher (ownership) plus all Verbum Cloud Subscriptions (rental).

G.K. Chesterton collection is split among Verbum libraries: e.g. Orthodoxy is in Starter and higher while Heretics is in Silver and higher. Verbum Cloud Plus and Premium subscriptions include G.K. Chesteron collection.

The Great Commentary of Cornelius á Lapide is in Verbum Gold and higher plus Verbum Cloud Plus and Premium subscriptions

St. Alphonsus Liguori is in Verbum Diamond and Verbum Portfolio plus Verbum Cloud Premium subscription

Searching for products on logos.com => https://www.logos.com shows inclusion in Verbum libraries and Cloud subscriptions:

St. Robert Bellarmine => https://www.logos.com/product/50187/the-works-of-st-robert-bellarmine is in Verbum Diamond and Verbum Portfolio libraries plus Verbum Cloud Premium subscription

Verbum.com => https://verbum.com has product descriptions, but does not show library and subscription inclusion.

This doesn't help at all. I see multiple terms here:

  • resources
  • features
  • datasets
  • verbum now
  • verbum cloud
  • base packages

A library is a set of books. Features/datasets are the tools which power the software.

  • A library and tools make up a base package. There are different tiers of base packages -- Starter, Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc. -- which offer a bigger library and/or more tools.

You need both books and tools to benefit from the software. Given the same features, the bigger your resources (library + datasets), the more results you will find while searching, the more advanced your searches can be, etc.

Now and Cloud are subscription offerings.

  • Now is a way to subscribe to the tools, instead of buying them.

If you want to own both the library and the tools, you would purchase a library and a feature set. If you want to own the library, but rent the tools, you would purchase a library and a Now subscription.

  • Cloud is a way to subscribe to the books and tools, instead of buying them.

If you don't want to buy a large collection of books, you would purchase a smaller library (which you own), then rent a larger collection of books and features.

Buying a library and subscribing to Now is a cost-effective way to get access to new tools as they are released every 6 weeks or so, and you will get other benefits from Now, such as discounts on books, etc.

  • A payment plan will let you spread out that $1K+ over a few months. No interest, small administrative fee of $5/payment.

Hope that resolves most of the confusion!

There is no way to use Logos for less than what I paid for my first car. If one of your goals is not spending four figures, you need to consider a different software package.

Had I understood the big picture before I purchased Logos the first time, I never would have dropped the cash.

My opinion only...YMMV.

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

this is so wrong - and it reminds me of the first book written by Faithlife's CEO....

Verbum Cloud is the full subscription service for those from the RCC (and probably way beyond that - even as an evangelical I tend to find that the largest of my packages somehow is Verbum, even though I prefer to buy my books) and those subscription packages are clearly intended for those who don't own a Logos library.

One thing that is important to remember here is that the content of the subscription model called Verbum Cloud does not have most of the resources that Verbum Portfolio has.

The reason for this is most publishers have not allowed Faithlife the rights to allow their titles to be offered by subscription. So the Cloud packages are going to be heavy on Lexham published resources and public domain books. this may change in the future, but who knows the future!

For right now, Quality bible research is going to require the ownership model. The Logos features being sold separately is Logos trying to maintain a revenue stream to continue developing past data sets and to develop new ones. You can imagine someone buying a dataset in Logos 4 and then just using the free upgrade, that user ends up not paying for the years of enhancements to those data sets. The current model even though its confusing, is Logos trying to be fair about what you are paying for, and giving you some options about how you pay for the program.

I would like to be advised in advance as to what Logos Now will add/offer me for the month of November and on going. Even if you offer it as an item in settings to be checked and then it will show up on my home page.

Hello Chris, Is there a way to lunch the resources straight into logos bible software like before? I tried to do that but I don't see that option. Please let me know.

Jean
