What Is It?

The New Testament is full of figurative language, including metaphorsimilemetonymy as well as other types of non-literal expressions. Figurative language is deeply meaningful, but it is often either overlooked, or difficult to understand (John 16:29). The Lexham Figurative Language of the New Testament Dataset (FLD) solves this problem by providing a structured dataset of important figurative expressions in the New Testament.

How It Works?

Logos scholars have analyzed the text of the Gospels (we are looking to expand this work to more books in the New Testament) looking for places where authors employ figurative language. Where figurative language occurs, a heading is provided, classification into a figurative language category, identification of the source term and the target concept (e.g. Source: anchor | Target: Hope in Christ), and a description of the relationship between the source and the target. The heading and the description can be found in The Lexham Figurative Language of the Bible Glossary

At the moment, this dataset can be accessed through the context menu, via a search query, and the Information Pane:

Information Pane:

Eventually, the data will also be displayed in the Passage Guide, the Sermon Starter Guide, and the Factbook.

For more information, please consult The Lexham Figurative Language of the Bible Glossary.

You did all the work for us. Now all we have to do is learn the very complicated search query method! Ha! Thanks!

You can run searches from the right-click menu or information panel, which is usually the easiest way.

An overhaul of the arcane search syntax was one of my hopes for Logos 7... something like a visual syntax picker. I hope this is coming someday. :(

We've also hyperlinked many terms in the Glossary to run the appropriate searches.

Cool! Wow! I did not know that. I have been a Logos user for quite some time but I have never been able to use the search query properly because I am not much of a symbolic thinker I guess. But this is a good tip!

However, my searches are not populating for some reason.  I have tried at least 5 searches.

Has your indexing completed? I'm having no problem.

Could you post a shot of the search panel ... it needs to be a bible search pointed to an appropriate Bible translation ... I need to look up if it is all RI or just limited ones.

Edit: also check under About Logos to verify you have the dataset installed.

It is now working. I restarted my logos. It fixed the problem.

Thanks to all.

It is working now. Is it possible that it was indexing but it didn't show an indexing circle? In any case, it is working well now.

I haven't played with this much yet, but from the description here it seems like this tagging would be valuable for many other parts of the Bible, such as Revelation, Jude, James, and the OT prophets and wisdom and poetry books.

Thanks for this!

Agreed. We hope to be finished tagging the rest of the NT soon, and it's possible more will be done in the OT in the future.

I really like this hyperlink feature for the figurative language glossary. I suggest that the same thing be done to Bullinger's Figures of Speech resource.

I have Logos 6 Gold, and am a Logos Now subscriber. My Logos icon shows to be "Logos 7."

But when I try your precise example -- right clicking on "Shepherd" in Matthew 2:6 -- no option for figurative language Category: Metaphor... appears in the right side menu.

Where am I going wrong?

Thank you.

What translation are you using? It must have a reverse interlinear to work.

If I click/hover a word that is part of figurative language, it populates a label entry in my Information tool. It shows all the different attributes. The attributes are blue and show a link, but the link does not lead anywhere. I think this is a bug. It should be linked to the corresponding Glossary.
