A tip to improve Logos Bible Software performance

I just thought I share this tip with everyone. When installing Logos if you are running an antivirus program on your computer, I recommend you add the Logos folder in the exception list within your security program. This helps reduce performance problems because the antivirus/security suite will ignore any Logos software activity.

I personal use Trend Micro and I have attached an image on how to add Logos to the exempt list, but this can be done with pretty much any other antivirus program. I placed the following directory on the exception list C:\Users\"your profile user name"\AppData\Local\Logos

Thanks for the tip, Diego.

I have set my AV (Charter Security Suite; I think it's the same as F-Secure) to exclude from real-time scanning, but not from a general scan.

It might be difficult for me to judge the speed enhancement, as I just upgraded my computer, so it's lot's faster than my old one already.

Yes that is F-Secure, I used to have that when I had frontier, its a great security suite. I also don't know how much of a performance difference it makes overall in general, but I am sure it helps when the scanner is running a scheduled scan so that it skips Logos and it wont interrupt in the middle of study session.

If you can't see the logos folder you need to enable the ability to view hidden folders.

I don't know how you claim this to be some kind of little secret by the AV companies. Anyone that believes antivirus programs are meant to block every single virus that is out there obviously doesn't understand the idea of virus security. Antivirus security is only one level of protection, the rest is done by the user by using common sense and logic when surfing the web. I work in IT and I know the value of a good antivirus program, and there are only a few out there that actually work. Yes there is signature based scanning, but the newer antivirus programs also use behavior based scanning, which scans for known virus behaviors to block zero day viruses. They also help protect against phishing scams and other known malware attacks that are out today. And to call AV software a virus, shows your lack of understanding of what a virus is.

But this is besides the point, because this post was simply to help those that do use antivirus software, if you don't then it doesn't apply to you and no one is saying you need to use AV software. We can always take this discussion to a tech based form instead, I don't believe the Logos forum is the place for this.

That is interesting because the people I help are always the ones without AV or expired AV, or because they use cheap free options that provide the most basic virus protection (signature based) which is known to not help much anymore cause viruses are now designed to behave differently then before.

No. Just no. Granted I'm not currently in IT, I once ran my own business doing IT before I moved into the pastorate, and I cannot disagree more. I have fixed more computers for people without any form of AV than I have ever fixed for those with it. While I've never kept records on it I shouldn't be surprised if it was easily 10 to 1. (EDIT: I mean in the twenty years since I closed shop - WRT all of the free work I do for parishioners, etc.)
The prevalence of spyware, adware, and trojans more than compensate for the few real viruses that I've encountered, I've been downloading and testing software as a foolish hobby for years and have yet to get nailed with an active virus... ever. But that is due to Kaspersky stopping them first.

Please read what I wrote. I ***did not*** say that people should not run A/V. I run A/V. I said, "I don't know why anyone uses a third-party A/V program." Note the word "third-party." Note my reference to the absolutely inexcusable practices by Symantec in their A/V offering.

I run A/V, but I run the A/V that MS ships with its OS. It's lightest weight, best integrates with the OS, and is developed by the organization with the greatest motivation to do it with best practices.

As far as the point of the thread goes, I'm sorry that I wasn't more explicit; so here goes: If you didn't run third-party A/V software, you wouldn't have to worry about tweaking its configuration to squeeze performance out of Logos. Yes, that's a direct statement. But it's not a personal attack.

This may well work. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable excluding a section of my hard drive from virus scans in exchange for a bit more performance. (Of course, this is coming from someone who is a bit of an extremist about cyber security. My spouse refuses to use my computer, because it's essentially set in "paranoid mode." It seems that can get in the way of web shopping. Perhaps so - but my computer isn't the one that catching viruses.)

You make a good point, by excluding Logos from the scan we rely on Logos to test their updates before releasing them, or someone can use Logos as a way to attack a computer system. I don't personally have not seen a noticeable performance difference between excluding logos and not excluding it, but since other antivirus programs act differently on different computers I figured I share this tip to everyone so that they could try if if thy ever notice Logos bugging down during a virus scans.
