Another month ... another 130+ resources of doubtful use ... how can I stop them being added to my library?

A preferable situation would be links on the logos now members page that would allow us to subscribe to them for free ... for the month ... where we could select that which we are curious about.

As it is, I am hiding them in my Library ... slowly  ... alt-click etc. is not slow ... slowly because of the indexer :-(

What are they this time? I haven't downloaded yet & have not been getting any emails about Now.

I normally enjoy these resources but if they're sending so many two months in a row this could get annoying.

The obvious solution to this, of course, would be to allow selective downloading of resources like they did with Libronix. FaithLife today, however, doesn't seem to care about the problems removing that option has created, despite years of complaints.

Are you sure that the 130+ were not also updates from resources that you already own?  I see only 10 resources that show a temporary license, that are new to me today.

I also got 130 temporary resources yesterday, mostly consisting of the Princeton Theology Journal, along with a handful of books. I assume they are part of October's LN Preview resources.

I don't think there's any way to opt out of the monthly preview resources, and considering that FL doesn't tend to tell us in advance, it seems like it would be more trouble to opt in or out after the update happened, depending on whether you found a particular month's book/course useful or not.

I feel your angst. I started a complaint thread about that this morning but decided not to post. Faithlife should reconsider the number of monthly previews - 135 is overkill Sad

Did you hide them one by one? I hid them in two batches (monographs and journals) and the indexing wasn't bad.

Create a collection with the rule license:permanent and call it "Regular Resources." You might also add language:English. This will cut out the temporary and Perseus books. Set your library collection to Regular Resources and do your searches there instead of all resources. This will automatically leave them out. They will still index and download, but they will not bug you otherwise.

Be aware that all Logos Now resources, not just the monthly previews, are Temporary licenses. This includes interactives, courses, media, manuals, glossaries, etc.  I don't think there's an way to automatically identify only the preview resources using a rule.  I wish there was.

It sure would be useful to distinguish between different types of temporary resources, and I've seen others including MJ bring this up.

Off the top of my head, there are Now subscriptions, LN monthly preview offerings, Cloud subscriptions, monthly rentals of specific sets of resources, and Mobile Ed subscriptions. Are there any others I've missed?

Has anyone from FL ever mentioned whether this was a simply a low priority that they hadn't gotten around to implementing, or whether there were technical issues which prevent them from further categorizing the type of temporary resources?

The rule: license:Temporary ANDNOT type:(courseware, manual, glossary) should help to identify all the temporary resources. You could build a Collection using that rule and then hide everything in that collection once a month.

If you've got Logos Cloud they're all temporary resources, so it won't work for Cloud customers.

Not necessarily. I have 31 temporary resources through my LN membership and these include the following types: Bible (2), Bible Harmony (1), Clause Visualization (1), Glossary (3), Grammar (1), Interactive (8), Lectionary (2), Manual (11) and Monograph (2)

It helps, but I wouldn't use it to hide resources.  There are monographs included with Logos Now that aren't previews.  I have now Logos Now and Verbum Now, so I'm not sure which "Now" these come from.  Most are Verbum, but not all:

I'm surprised Modern Christian Theology is still there. It was a preview resource from last month.  Actually now that I look at it, most of these may be preview resources that haven't been deactivated yet.

But the last two probably aren't.

Then after the temporary time, to keep your hard drive clean, shouldn't you do this:

delete unlicensed resources or delete locked resources

I actually rather enjoy many preview resources each month. I don't really see why they would be a problem. Do people just not like to look at them in their libraries? There's always a chance I might use them each month. Bring em on Logos!

I like them too, the problem is with sending so many across at once that they force a long index. Plus like with last month they were of a sort that there wasn't much practical value in previewing them--they were the sort of thing that either you would know you wanted them for long term research or they were useless.

Meanwhile, the other volumes sent across got lost in the long list of the series volumes. This month, I see a large download waiting for me, but two days in there is no information from FL about what the resources are, not even the titles.

It would be really useful for the upcoming month's preview resources to be published before the end of the current month, so we could plan what we want to read over the next 30 days.

If we have to ask each month for the web site to be updated, perhaps a better system could be put in place that automatically keeps the Now Members pages up to date?

That would also eliminate any oversight on content not fully being updated, such as:

  • "Logos Now members save 15–40% on the products below" when the current greatest savings is 58%
  • "Lexham discounts valid through September 9" but the discount is still in effect

Looks like alabama24 just created a suggestion for this: https://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-7/suggestions/16462621-ln-preview-items-preference-toggle

For those who don't like the preview resources: do you not want the preview resources at all, or is this more about the downloading and indexing? For example, if they showed up in your Library each month but didn't automatically download and reindex, would that remove the need to opt out of the previews?

As the OP ... I would not want anything in my library ... full stop ... unless I explicitly asked for it. There is a logos members page that can have product page links and codes that will allow purchase of sets for $0, with a one month subscription license. The mechanisms are already there ... why would we need to have different coding on the desktop?... Library clutter is part of the problem. Stop the marketing ... solve the problem ... simple!

I must also admit to having concerns over the frequent promotion of UserVoice as a solution. Apart from the historical failure to respond to the issues except on sporadic fits ... as a system it does not work. 10 votes among the myriad of ideas. There are issues in the design of notes / highlighting / labels / tagging /  cited by / library management / layouts / layout specific resource setting etc.... all pretty basic stuff. They have been around on the forums for a while.

The cynic in me, unfortunately strong today, would say that it is difficult to market a 'highlighting' feature (or pick any feature from above) ... no fancy videos, no L8 list of features, no marketing hype etc. to simply say that we have finally developed it so that it works beyond the initial attempt. So instead time is spent on 'interactives', 'explorers', and a myriad of 'data types'. rather than the basic features that should be core to the application.

When was the last time that any of the above features materially changed? L4? L5? I would certainly be disquieted if my post resulted in any development time being re-prioritised away from development of the core features!

Having said all that (apologies!) I am also very aware that you and many others from Faithlife are here in the Forums, regularly sorting issues ... and I cannot think of any company, or any size, that is as responsive.

Regards

Martin.

I don't think most subscribers will mind or dislike the free previews. I don't think that, given the limited resources FL has to devote to other user requests that are much more urgent, changing something like this should be much of a priority.

You're getting pushback now because this is the second month in a row poor choices have been made in which resources to preview. People don't want large, PD (?) series that they're not going to be able to do much with that just clutter up their libraries.

Meanwhile, I'm starting the third full day of this download pending and STILL no one has been able to inform what exactly all the resources are.

For me:

  1. I don't like the downloading and indexing of items I don't own and won't have access to in a month
  2. I don't want search results to appear for things I don't own and won't have access to in a month
  3. My time is limited and I don't really have time to review materials... especially not within a month window.

I would perhaps be more interested in "web only" previews. If something came along I had interest in I could view it online.
