I created a table of contents for my personal book in word 2016 (screenshot). I referred to the wiki but still can't figure out what I'm supposed to do to make the table of contents appear in the slide out panel of my personal book. Any help would be appreciated. By the way the screenshot is what it looks like in word 2016.

You don't actually need to insert a table of contents, but the headers/section titles have to have a heading style applied to them. Usually those styles are applied to the whole line. In your example it looks like, if you applied the "Heading 1" style only to part of the line, that might be the problem. Try hitting enter behind "L(yman)" in your text, then select the whole line, click on a different style and then click again on the Heading 1 style (to make sure that one is applied to the whole line). See if that helps.
