Hi all,

In two minds how to use the $25 voucher on Logos purchases and wanted a bit of insight from the community. I've had my eye on Mounce's dictionary of OT and NT words, but I was wondering if this might be a waste in light of the Greek and Hebrew lexicons I already have through Logos Gold (BDAG, Louw-Nida, TWOT, etc.).

Can any one out there in the community offer any advice?

I use logos for personal study, teaching and preaching if that helps any.

Many thanks.

Liam

I wouldn't want to offer someone else advice on what resources they should buy...that's too individualized.

But in thinking through the options logically, I would be less likely to buy something which doubles up a feature/resource I already have and more likely to get something I don't.

I keep a list of books of the bible and the top three commentaries on each. When something like this coupon comes along, I tend to look for a book where I am thin on  commentaries and pick one up. (But if you have Gold, you probably aren't thin on commentaries.) An additional systematic theology or biblical theology is more useful now than they used to be because of the new tools on L7.  You might want to look at one of those in your faith tradition as an option if you aren't already covered there. (The packages don't tend to have a lot of these works in them until you get to the very top.)

I have Mounce, and like it just fine. But I also have a couple of the others you list and I really almost never use both at once. So I would lean away from doubling up, if it were me. But you aren't me, so do whichever jingles your bells.

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

When vouchers like this come along, I tend to look for things that are on my wish list that rarely go on sale. Zondervan resources fit that criteria, but like Doc B offers, you also need to conaider is this going to fill a gap in your library or just give you more of the same. The answer to that is subjective.

Hey Doc B and DoC,

Thanks for the sage advice. Both of you confirmed what I perhaps already suspected. I've passed over Mounce in favour of Dale Ralph Davis' commentaries on Joshua, Judges and I Samuel. Much happier with this purchase, and if they are half as good as his work on II Samuel then they'll be no chance of the dreaded buyers regret!

Have a great evening. Blessings.

Mounce is very good to have. It fits well with you already have. As with commentaries, it's helpful to have more than one lexical reference. In Logos, it's fairly simple to consult multiple references.

He gives you the number if times a word appears in the NT or OT and defines them in a teachable friendly style. I like him and own others (e.g. Vine's, Thayer, BDAG, HALOT, NIDOTTE NIDNTTE, etc.).

But you didn't go wrong with Ralphy. He's an excellent expositor!

Good choice, Ralph adds value.

I have them and absolutely love these commentaries, as I do his others. Great decision, IMO.
