Will someone with experience with both of these say a few words about the usefulness of these two series. Is one better than the other better in terms of scholarship? Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi Brian,

I don't have any experience with the IVP books but I absolutely love the Zondervan Counterpoints. I have the entire Logos set and I've found them to be invaluable in helping me understand different perspectives.

When you actually think about it Zondervan has the better scholarship and has more volumes at a better price; which is actually great for Z products πŸ‘ Besides, more topics and more extensive treatments are given to some volumes in the counterpoint series.

I know of at least two in the Spectrum series, one being the classic on end-time views and one on the Lord's supper.  Both were well done.  The Lord's supper one even included the Catholic view, which I thought was good.  My guess is, with both series, each volume will need to be judged on its own.  I would like to eventually own both, because often one work will fill in blanks that the other does not offer or explain well.  IVP is a good publisher/series.

I like Apples.  Especially Honeycrisp.

Thanks for the comments. I suspect Friedrich is correct in that like commentary sets, I will find that some topics are covered better in one series as opposed to the other.

I too have a couple of the Counterpoint books and have found them to be very helpful. I appreciate the comment about the scholarship of Zondervan, DAL. That is helpful for me.

Thanks again!

I wouldn't bother with either. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is sufficient enough. It's not our job to decide which doctrines are true.

I think the Bible is enough, but it's always wise to consider other points of view. The Bible tells us to prove all things and hold fast that which is good. It also tells us to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world. And it tells us to take heed to the doctrine for by doing so we will save ourselves and those that hear us. So maybe according to the catechism of the catholic church doctrine is not important and it shouldn't be your job to search the Scriptures daily to see if what you are being taught is true or not, but according to the Bible (which is our authority, not the catechism) it is very important πŸ‘πŸ‘ŒβœŒοΈπŸ˜‰ So anyway, open your Bible to find the verses I mentioned in this reply, you will find it to be a very rewarding spiritual exercise, unless you think is not your job to find out if those principles are really found in the Bible or not πŸ˜‰

Blessings!

Wait a minute! Is today April's Fools Day? I thought it was on the first not on the twelfth LOL

Yeah, he's gotta be kidding! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

Alright, I'll be good now. Let me try to get my laptop to reply to the other comment on Zondervan scholarship that is featured on the counterpoint series.

Surely you aren't suggesting that I blindly accept the catechism of the Catholic Church. Why would I even have a copy of the Bible or of Logos to help with my studies? I believe there is much I can learn from listing to others views, even if it is just learning how to respond!

DAL, Did you come up with anything on this?

Wow, I can't believe I forgot about this thread. 😱

Well, my perspective has changed since my last post. I own a few volumes of the IVP Spectrum series in Accordance. They had a sale not long ago. I also own the entire counterpoints series (except the ones on prepub).

My opinion is: If you can own both sets you'll have great scholarship from both sides. Zondervan is cheaper and has more topics than IVP, but they both are useful on their own or to supplement each other.

I would also recommend the Perspective Series by Broadman and Holman.

If I had to choose one I'd go with Zondervan, since it covers more for my money.

Sorry for my super delayed response ☺️😬 πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ‘Œ

Thanks. The Counterpoints Series is on Sale and I am going to make the leap. The Dynamic Pricing helps me out quite a bit. I'll check out the Perspective Series as well.

I got the new counterpoint series upgrade. It's on sale too for $28.99 bucks. If I'm not mistaken, cheaper than prepub. Here's the link:

https://www.logos.com/product/144090/zondervan-counterpoints-series-upgrade-iii

In prepub it was $34.99 out of prepub is $44.99, so for $28.99 it's a steal. Now I have ALL the volumes currently available in Logos πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ‘Œ

DAL

Ps. Even with the upgrade Zondervan is still cheaper than IVP and you still get more volumes πŸ‘
