I have a question about the indexer in L4:mac. I (along with many others) have noticed when the indexer runs, my MBP's fans get to spinning.
Is there anyway to tone down the indexer so that the fans don't spin as heavily or is that impossible? They spin pretty heavily when the indexer gets going.
Thanks!

I am not a programmer (if I remember you are) but I thought the purpose of the fans was to cool the processor, which I know is used heavily during the Indexing on L4. If the indexing power were backed down, would that mean a longer index? Is it worth it?
I don't have a MBP, just a standard MB. I have not noticed the fans getting loud (i am sure the MBP has better or more fans than the standard MB) during the Indexing of L4M but when I run VM and L4W the fans tend to kick it up a notch.

I was wondering if there was a way to simply optimize the indexer so it doesn't use quite the processor power that it does now. Not sure if the PC version does this as well, but it would be interesting to know. My fans just don't spin, they really spin.
My main question is there a way to optimize the indexer code so it doesn't tax the processor quite as heavily. The Mac indexer already seems longer than the PC indexer, so I hate to see it go longer, but I'm not sure if taxing the processor as much as it's doing is so well either.

After reading your two posts, I decided to conduct a test. I have not used L-4 Mac on my MBP in a few weeks, so it had some updating, downloading and indexing to perform. The Indexer is jamming both processors (180–195%), but I have not had any abnormal fan activity.
I suppose I have downloaded and now indexing all those new Interlinears released for the Windows Beta, so the MBP will get a good workout by the time all that indexing is completed.
EDIT: My MBP finally completed indexing after about 8 hours. I detected no unusual fan activity, not did the case become hot to the touch. I don't believe it rose more than 10 or 15 degrees above room temperature.

Yeah, my MBP's processors were really jammed when I first installed L4, and I haven't even upgraded to a L4 package yet!
Nice to know your processor fans didn't spin too much. What MBP model do you have? I have the first gen 15" unibody MBP. Maybe with the thinner design, I hear the fans more. I also heard the fans bigtime on my 12" PowerBook G4, but then again it was a G4.
Maybe the noise shows up in thinner designs. My attorney runs her Toshiba all day long and her fans aren't quite as noisy as mine, then again, her's is in a think plastic shell.
