With the scary reports about major problems some users are having with yesterday's 7.11 release, I'm reluctant to initiate an update to get the Black Friday purchases I made.

Do we have a sense yet of how widespread the problems are with the new release?

Can someone from Logos report whether a patch in the works?

I'm assuming they're working on it, as it's 10:30AM on the Left Coast. Maybe someone will confirm that assumption.

Which reminds me... We need more control over updates!

Yes. She should be able to select to just download the book she paid for without having to take a possibly hazardous update along with it.

FaithLife, do you still think this is not a problem worth addressing?

Our analytics suggest that less than 0.3% of Windows users on 7.11 have encountered this bug. (Mac users are not affected.)
We are working on a Service Release, which we will get out as soon as we can.

I don't think we ever said it wasn't worth addressing. Smile Selective downloading is a good idea, but not a trivial change. It requires UI changes, under-the-hood database management, considerations on indexing, and a host of other things. We have some ideas on how to solve this, but as usual, it's a matter of priority. To add your support for developing this idea, please vote for it here: https://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-6/suggestions/5751660-install-only-selected-resources-to-save-disk-space

Thank you, Adam et al.!

There are a lot of things I would be willing to do in life with just a 0.3% likelihood of complete failure.  Wink

Selective downloading was a beneficial feature available through Libronix that you unwisely chose to remove for later versions of Logos.

And this default response you all give: "Want us to fix a design flaw? Rally support & run a campaign on uservoice and we'll consider it!" really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. With things like this we're not talking about adding flashy bells and whistles; we're talking about overcoming a design flaw whereby customers cannot access resources they have given you money for without potential jeopardizing their systems.

You diminish goodwill every time you play this card.

Did I hear Libby being praised yet again?!

It’s amazing how solidly she’s coded. Used Libby just hours ago.

And so many features that younger Logos coders groan over, hoping there won’t be enough votes.

Inigo Montoya: He's dead. He can't talk.
Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
Inigo Montoya: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.

Whoa, sorry, Sean. Didn't mean to touch a nerve there. I'm sorry if my response was a bit formulaic. I happen to agree with you that this is an important feature, and selective downloading is something will very likely do in the future. But I deliberately understated this, since plans can change, and I don't want to risk breaking anything that looks like promise.

As far as diminishing goodwill when we play the "please vote for it" card, I'm open to suggestions. We want your feedback. It has a huge impact on what we choose to develop or improve.

  • We heard users saying they want Logos to be faster and more stable; and we've spent the better part of the past year doing that.
  • "Fuzzy Search" was a broadly-requested feature, and we delivered it with Logos 7 (and hopefully better than it ever was in Libronix).
  • 6 out of the top 20 uservoice requests are related to improving notes and highlights, and we are in the middle of a huge development for just that.

We listen to our users through a variety of channels (forums, phones, surveys, in person), and part of the problem is, you have so many good ideas! But they aren't all desired equally. Something that's essential -- or a "design flaw" ;) -- to one person is trivial to another. Uservoice is just one tool we have in our toolbox to help us rank how important each idea is to our userbase as a whole.

If you have suggestions on how we can improve how we listen to customers and prioritize work, I would love to hear it. So as not to hijack the rest of this thread, please email me at aborries[at]logos.com.

I hope you really didn’t mean that. You delivered a Bible sounds-like. You offended Libby, and neither are remotely fuzzy search algorithms (technically).

The struggle over selective downloading dates back to Logos 4. Aside from the current issue that sometimes you want to get resources without downloading a program update because there is a known problem, there are times when huge updates are being rolled out and the 10MB resource you just bought is backed up somewhere in the queue.  No problem here in the US where I have a 100+ mb connection at home, but travelling particularly in a foreign country it can be a literal and practical impossibility to get the backlog downloaded to get to it.

Anyhow, that debate was had eight years ago and for those of us who this is a challenge, we just had to adapt, so I am encouraged to read that it is still a possibility to find a solution!

While we are still working on an update that should fix this, so will installing .NET 4.7.1. You can do so from either link below. This will require a reboot of the computer to take effect.

This has been fixed in 7.11 SR-1.
