Mike Tourangeau:

Is this pretty hard on a system? I closed down and came back later and not only is the Bible tags not showing up but my fans are going crazy (?)

This is indeed a possibility and may explain the slowness in loading the VF. I have some possible solutions to the problem in mind, I'll do some tweaking and see if I can get a V2 out by the end of the week.

Cheers.

Label searches are processor intensive (understatement).

I would recommend only running the portions of the visual filter that you need when you need them; alternately, just run with the Info window (Tools -> Information, right-hand pane in the below image, bottom) open as the data will appear there (but with no visual indicator in the main text window).

Rick, would it be difficult to make it so that we can select which labels show up in "information panel?" If you look in my screenshot you can see that there are many things that clutter up the view. I would like to see only the "Intertext" labels

And the Labels are not sorted consistently, so you have to keep looking for Intertext. Info should be consistent with Context menu in symbols and naming e.g. Propositional Outline has a label symbol and is called Semantic Feature.

Devin, would you (or another mod) mind adding everything above the '---' to the post at the top of this thread, please?

Done!

And thanks for the new filters.

I believe re-org of both the context menu and the information panel is under consideration for a future release. No time frame estimate (or promise of feature), just reporting things I've heard discussed.

...This looks like an amazing tool, but am I not able to use it without Logos Now?  Also, why does the visual filter option initially appear but then disappear from the visual filter drop-down menu?

Just following-up.

Andrew, the dataset the visual feature relies on is presently licensed for Logos Now / Faithlife Connect users.

Unsure about your visual filter question.

I'll bet it has to do with the software trying to only display in the list those Visual Filters which are relevant. If you are missing a license or resource needed, it should not appear. Maybe in this case it needs a second or two to figure out if it should be there or not.

LMAM:

Due to limitations in the visual filter system, they are resource-specific; that is one VF for the English translation and another for the interlinear. Links below:

First here are the required highlighter styles (the VF will not work without them)

- Old Testament and Apocrypha: https://documents.logos.com/documents/0276008c4cd94f369c73f83fe0601299/details

- New Testament: https://documents.logos.com/documents/722c6433960f4c50a121a4340c10f070/details

Second here are the visual filters themselves:

- Apostolic Fathers in English: https://documents.logos.com/documents/2bd60eabb4904f00bbd5e2c0ddab854c/details

- Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear https://documents.logos.com/documents/fe5c34a0360448fa9cd9171a728bb81a/details

Please note, in the above resources, the intertext sources are not available through the context menu (right-click); but rather by going Tools -> Information.

---

Do let me know if you run into any problems. Be aware that these Visual Filters are dependent on intertext tagging that is available in Logos 7.10 onwards.

I feel really stupid. I've read every post and have all the resources and Logos Now and still I can't get things to work for me. What am I doing wrong? I have the VF's and the Highlighters but the VF does not appear in the resource selection for VFs. Help me please.

Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man.

Sorry, but my post is a commercial advertising a Logos March Madness sale item!  I'm jumping to the conclusion that anyone wading through this technology on the Apostolic Fathers and how they employ scripture may have an interest in:

https://www.logos.com/product/31152/ancient-christian-commentary-on-scripture-complete-set-updated-edition

This commentary set should prove quite interesting for people who want to see how the Apostolic Fathers dealt with Scripture.

This is at an amazing price.  One of my best friends paid over $1,000 for the print edition and he is considering this sale just so that the commentaries will be included in his Logos research.

Thanks LMAM. I'm just testing it now and it seems to work well.

The Apostolic Fathers Gk-Eng Interlinear VF can be improved by:

  • Having one query item, because the Search is 50% faster  e.g.
    •  {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Ex>} AND {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus = "Apostolic Fathers"}  ==> {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Ex> AND Corpus = "Apostolic Fathers"}
  • Omitting Source with NO results, because they still take the same time   e.g.
    • <Ju>   which should be <Jude>, but still no results
    • <3Jn>
    • <1Mac-4Mac>
    • <Azariah>
    • <Bar>
    • ...I didn't go further into the OT

Updated "Label Intertext + Quotation: Blue Letter" visual filter as Label Intertext has expanded so {Label Intertext} finds more than Old Testament use of the New Testament.

Matthew 6:13 has two Echos from Sirach 23:1 and Sirach 33:1 along with a Dead Sea Scroll Echo.  Also Matthew 6:13 is the source for three uses in Apostolic Fathers and two in Nag Hammadi Codices.

One performance idea is searching Surface Text instead of All Bible Text.

Faithlife internally has numbered deuterocanonical books; logos wiki has => Canonical Commentary Collections

FYI: idea for Blue Letter came from printed Jesus Centered Bible that has Blue text in Old Testament along with box explaining usage in New Testament.

Published "Label Intertext Apostolic Fathers" highlighting palette and "Label Intertext Target Apostolic Fathers" visual filter to Logos Visual Filters group => https://faithlife.com/logos-visual-filters/documents

Copying Visual Filter also causes associated Highlighting Palette to be copied => https://documents.logos.com//documents/cd13e66f307247279ee3d500a914fc35

Rick Brannan (Faithlife):

Visual Filter customization suggestion is changing All Bibles to a collection with a few Bibles where want to see Apostolic Father sources (so other Bibles can be opened without doing Intertext searches)

Hey Beloved, what resource are you trying to apply the VF to?

Hi LMAM, Thanks for your response I was using the ESV. I loaded more VFs that KS4J posted on his FL site and it is working now though it takes awhile to load.

And thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. Based on all the feedback, I am currently working on some solutions and hope to have a V2 very soon.

Mike Tourangeau:

This is a brilliant use of Logos' tagging. Thank you!

One question, once I see the capsule alerting me to the quotation/allusion. What is the best way to get to it quickly?

Thanks Mike. I'm glad you like it.

Great question. Yes, the simplest way to open the Information tool (Tools -> Information). Then either hover your mouse over the verse in question or type reference into the reference box. This process works reliably in both your bible of choice running the 'Apostolic Fathers use of the Bible' visual filter or in one of Rick Brannan's books running its dedicated visual filter (ie. 'Apostolic Fathers in English (Biblical and Apocryphal Sources).

See the images below for visual representation.

Thanks LMAM.

I have got the bible to EVF working but I can't get the ECF to the Bible working. No colored highlighting though the intertext links do show up under tools/information.

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Thanks.
