4.0c RC1 "Not Responding"

Glad to see so many bugs got squashed and we continue to move forward. Sorry to say the "Not Responding" problem (not on the on the fixed list) is still a problem (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/16252/124293.aspx#124293).

What are your system specs, and have you tried to update your video driver (from computer manufacturer's site)?

I found this on the wiki and it solved the "not responding" problem for me.
- Turn on some of the compatibility settings in the Logos icon – here’s how:
- Close Logos
- Right-click on the icon you use to start Logos (whether this be on the desktop, on your Start menu, or on your Quick Launch toolbar); you’ll need to do this in all places if you use multiple methods)
- Select Properties
- Click the Compatibility tab
- (If you’re using Vista) Turn on the checkboxes for “Disable desktop composition” and “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings”
(If you’re using XP) Turn on the checkbox for “Turn off advanced text services for this program” - Click OK
- Restart Logos

Update: The "solution" that I posted above only eliminates the black screen. I am still getting the "not responding" hang occasionally when switching layouts and working within notes.

Hi Melissa -
I am the author of the Post Linked above and I have RC1 and I am not having the Not Responding too as it relates to Spurgeon's lectures vol.1. I have the most up-to-date video driver, too, and it is still an issue.
Thanks!
John

Hi Melissa,
My computer:
HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook pc
Intel Core2 Duo T7300 2Ghz
2GB memory with 4 GB Ready Boost on an SD card.
2-160GB internal hard drives
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS video
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 with all updates.I did have the latest video driver (v 8.16.11.8766, 10/3/2009) I took it back to the previous version (v 7.15.11.7713, 2/3/2008) but it didn't make any difference - same problem. I put it back to the latest version and I still have the same problem.
The system was working fine with the above configuration until these symptoms started on Thursday 4/29, shortly after installing B7 or maybe the fonts update and the same day I downloaded the two resource update files.

Thanks. I've submitted your logs in hope that they'll be helpful to development.

I've noticed another symptom that makes me wonder if the Layout function is at play here. Scenario: I scroll NASB text up, right click on a verse, select add verse to note and start typing the note. My CPU activity shoots up, then the screen goes black and the window title bar says "Not Responding". When it comes back from the blackout I sometimes notice that the NASB is where it was before I scrolled the text up for a couple seconds, then it snaps back to where it was when I right-clicked the verse. It's as if Logos took a snapshot before I scrolled and another after I scrolled and when it comes out of the blackout it starts to recover by showing the first snapshot and then the second snapshot.
I noticed once or twice when Logos recovered from a blackout started when I closed a resource that the first image I see when it recovers is with the resource, and then the resource disappears like it was just before the blackout.
I don't always notice this phenomenon, but have a few times now and I'm wondering if the Layouts function has something to do with the problem. This has happened with Use Internet set to either Yes or No.
Hope this helps.

Tim, I think you nailed it. I think that there is a problem with the layout function. The same thing that you described is happening to me.

One of the things I noticed yesterday is that when I attach a note to a passage, rather than to a selection, L4 slows to a crawl and I get the "not responding" issue as well. (I don't see the layout issue you describe, however.)
It seems to me that the issue is that, when the note is attached to a passage, L4 'populates' that note to all the other open resources with a Bible text field (Bibles, commentaries, etc.) as we type them. It would be helpful, if L4 would wait until we take the focus off the note text interface, or even off the note pane before populating the information.
So far I have not had L4 crash on me because of this. L4 always comes back and lets me continue with the note, though sometimes it takes two or three more 'not responding' sessions before I finish it.
Please note that this only happens when I add a note to a passage. It does not happen when I add a note to a highlighted selection (which is what I typically do).

Same here. To speed things up I had to prevent ALL my converted notes from auto-"loading" (having them visible in the resources they're about) unless I open them.
In addition, I'm getting black screens, at least daily... often using resources that have lots of links to other resources (e.g., RCL).

What are your system specs
Melissa,
My laptop is dual-core Intel 2.53 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Vista32 Pro. I often get the black screen and Not Responding in Logos4, as myself and others continue to report here and elsewhere.
Tonight, I was messing around with Microsoft Visual Studio Pro 2010, 60-Day Demo. I believe it is a .NET Application too.
Visual Studio was the only application open (excluding all the assorted "background" stuff of a Windows system). Visual Studio would also display a black screen and Not Responding in the EXACT same way that Logos4 does for me. It seemed to happen in response of me "asking things to happen" - in this case, start a new Visual Studio project. Just like asking Logos4 to open a new resource, start a search or open a new panel. Even changing pages within a Logos Resource.
I would suggest that its a .NET thing, rather than something with Logos4 itself.
I've seen messages that suggest the Logos Developers have a hotline into the .NET guys at Microsoft, so I'm thinking "your guys should phone their guys, and do lunch!".

I was unable to download and test RC2, but did download and test RC3 today - my problem with Not Responding and black-out screens is gone. Thank you Logos.
