Vision 2020 2 yr or 3 yr Chronological Bible Reading Diet

I'm in the process of wrapping up completion of a 2 year Bible reading program (which can be programmed into Logos' Reading Plans and either printed off for use with a printed Bible and/or used to read the passages using Logos). It just feels like the right time to share this since many start reading plans at the first of the year. I've adjusted it, using a variety of sources--some of them found here: https://wiki.logos.com/Reading_Plans
This plan assumes a Western Christian Tradition. With the year 2020 on the horizon, and with 20-20 being analogous to having good vision, I was enticed by the prospect of using this wordplay for God's glory and for the advance of His kingdom and reign. In any case, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2Ti 3:16-17 ESV, and this plan is one of many plans a person could use to grow in their knowledge of God's Word.
This plan in its earlier iterations was discussed a bit in other forums--but those were picking up in discussions begun 8 and 9 years ago, and so I won't link them here at this time. It's been through many revisions in the past two years, and now this OT Chronology is completely new, derived from both highly complex and piecemeal chronologies and from other popular and less sophisticated chronologies--but it normally takes chapters at a time in a semi-chronological fashion. The NT Chronology, on the other hand, is highly dependent on two functionally matching chronologies on the above-mentioned wiki. Finally, the OT and NT sections were checked chapter-by-chapter thru the whole Bible to make sure everything is included and nothing is duplicated (just as some of those chronologies at the wiki were corrected for omissions and duplications in this process recently as well as over the past two years).
In any case, this will work well for either a 2 year or 3 year reading plans, depending on one's needs. It is intended to be a healthy daily diet of Scripture, with the reader completing every part of the Bible once during that time, and with other sections deserving more attention being completed many times over.
It is set up in 4 daily reading portions, starting with a daily Psalms reading, then an OT Chronology reading (which will also work the reader through Psalms and Proverbs one time itself), then a daily Proverbs reading, and finally a daily NT Chronology reading.
*The Psalms will be read 6 times (twice a year on the 3 yr plan, and thrice a year on the 2 yr plan).
*The OT Chronology will be read once--including passes thru both Psalms and Proverbs once each.
*The Proverbs will be read 6 times (twice a year on the 3 yr plan, and thrice a year on the 2 yr plan).
*The NT Chronology will be read 4 times (twice a year on the 2 yr plan, 1.33 times on 3 yr plan, see Note)
-
Note: On the 3 yr plan, users could easily program this to repeat the NT an additional two times and increase their NT diet. Thus, they would be getting 2 completions a year that way, or 6 times in 3 years. Alternately, they could choose to remove one pass thru the NT and then complete the NT once a year.
All total, the above core plan will take the reader thru the NT four times, Psalms and Proverbs 7 times total, and the OT once. I should mention there will definitely be times the daily Psalms and Proverbs readings and the OT Chronology readings of those same books overlap and duplicate on the same or adjacent days, but this has not been perceived as a problem for me, I've just taken it as how things sometimes work out--but it may throw others off a little if they don't expect it.
As mentioned above, it is set to plug in to Logos' Reading Plans. Taking a quick break for some quick Logos Training on setting up Reading Plans; here is how you set up a text string for four daily readings in that tool:
dailyreadingA | dailyreadingB | dailyreadingC | dailyreadingD
For our purposes, that will be:
{Ps} | {OT} | {Pr} | {NT}
Here is how you get sections to repeat, and thus increase your diet of those sections:
Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps, Ps | {OT} | Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr, Pr | {NT}, {NT}, {NT}, {NT},
Now, that said, the bottom section (or text "string") can be copied and pasted into the "Reading Plans" applet under "Documents"
First, Select Bible Version and copy-paste below text string into the box with words "New Reference Range":
Once done, it should look something like this:
You can give it a title in the next box below, if you wish. (Incidentally, Ecc 3:1-8 and Jer 6:16 are just two readings to get one off and going at the beginning of the plan. 2Ti 3:16-17 could've also been used, along with others--or they could've all been kept off, for that same matter.)
Finally, set the days of the week desired and the start and finish dates. I personally like to run them Mon-Sat, but some prefer Mon-Fri with two days on the weekend to catch up readings. The dates Jan 1, 2019-Dec 31, 2020 would represent a 2 year plan.
And so, without further ado, here is the text string to copy-and-paste:

{Bold emphasis added above to assist in seeing the separate sections and subsections--this will not affect Logos' ability to read and interpret the text string. For the 3 yr readers wanting 6 passes thru the NT--or two per year, as mentioned above--just place the entire above string in something like "Wordpad" and then copy the last string beginning with the comma at ", Lk1, Jn 1:1-14, Mt 1, ... , Jud, 1 Jn-3 Jn, Re" and paste this section two more times at the end of the string.}
P.S. If you try this out, let me know what you think. I've also played around with the idea of breaking up the NT daily readings so I'm always getting time hearing our Savior in the gospels, and then working from Acts-Rev on the other reading--but 5 readings per day like this would probably not print off as well with one line per day--I personally like having a paper to check off and then mix up how to accomplish time in His Word with a variety of apps, bibles, and audio bibles. Thus, I've sometimes supplemented my diet in one of the gospels on the side--and this kind of speaks to me that perhaps another change should be made to the diet here. At least it is not like one chronological Bible that keeps readers out of the New Testament entirely for a solid 9½ months!

Thanks Anthony - This is super helpful! My wife was asking if I could create her a chronological reading plan so this will work well for her. I can easily remove the Ps/Pr aspect if she only wants the OT/NT. If we wanted to make say a 6 month reading plan, using the OT/NT chronology but removing the Ps/Pr repetition, such that the entire Bible is read every 6 months in a chronological fashion - how would we edit this for that?

You're welcome, Keith! And many blessings to you and yours in the New Year!Keith Barrett said:Thanks Anthony...If we wanted to make say a 6 month reading plan, using the OT/NT chronology but removing the Ps/Pr repetition, such that the entire Bible is read every 6 months in a chronological fashion - how would we edit this for that?
In setting this up, it depends on whether she wants one reading per day or two (I personally think a New Testament believer needs some time in the New Testament every day, but she may be already getting this in her diet elsewhere). The "|" divider already in place after Malachi in the above original post keeps this as a separate daily reading, and the below includes only one simultaneous pass through each the OT and the NT, and you just configure the dates on Logos for six months. {Note: you can also set up readings for the whole year, and I'll explain how to go about that a little further down.}
{Editorial Note: Mentions of "one daily reading" or "two daily readings" here must be taken somewhat with a grain of salt, as the schedule the Barretts want will work through roughly 6.5 chapters per day (and the core program in the original post covers about 4.2 chapters per day). Thus, if the reader was on a plan with "one daily reading" and was in the middle of a long, narrative or unbroken part of the chronology, like the books of Genesis or Exodus or Hebrews or Revelation, the reader will have days when all their readings are in those books in one, extended reading--yes, this is true. However, when working through the portions where the chronology works through various books simultaneously, even with "one daily reading," the reader may have portions of several books to read that day to stay on schedule with several chapters per day.}
1. For a six month reading plan:
A. In a summary fashion, the below follows this format, and is set for two daily readings, which would work through the OT Chronology and the NT Chronology at the same time:

B. Now, when I re-read your question, it does seem you were probably only asking about setting up one daily reading. This would schedule the OT in about 4.8 mos and then schedule the NT for roughly the last 1.2 mos, so if that is what you and she still want, we can just replace the "|" divider after "Malachi" with a single comma (","). Thus, it would handle them one right after the other, instead of working through them both at the same time.
Or, in summary fashion:

Whichever reading setup you all decide on above, just copy-paste the entire text string into the "New Reference Range" window, as in the first illustration in the original post above, and follow through with the rest of the directions, setting the dates from about Jan 1st thru Jun 30th
2. For a one year reading plan which repeats two of the six month plans:
If you want to go ahead and print out the whole year and "strike while the iron is hot," so to speak, you may make the appropriate repetitions yourself in a word processor (something like Microsoft WordPad® will be more than enough).
A. For two daily readings, adjust the format as such:
{OT Chronology}, {OT Chronology} | {NT Chronology}, {NT Chronology}
B. For one daily reading, adjust the format as such:
{OT Chronology}, {NT Chronology}, {OT Chronology}, {NT Chronology}
Again, whichever readings you all agree on and set up in your word processor, copy-paste into the "New Reference Range" window, as in the first illustration in the original post above, and follow through with the rest of the directions. You may want to preview it before it is printed out to make sure it is working the way you want it to.
Again, Happy New Year!0 -
Hello Anthony,
I am attempting to do this in Logos 8. In my Docs menu when I create a new reading plan, then choose custom reading plan. It doesn't allow me to choose a Bible version and a copy paste of your scripture references just goes into the heavens never to be seen again. What am I not getting or doing correctly?
Thus far I am having to type each reference in separately by day then add a session. Very time consuming. Even pasting this comma seperated text string in a passage list gives me no joy.
Would you be able to help?
Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for the post.

Instead of creating a custom reading plan, select the "generate a reading plan" option and try from there.
Please let us know if that gives you what you need

Joy of Joys it worked! Thank you so much.

Thank you for filling in during my absence from this thread, and my apologies to 4HisGlory that my use of an outdated version caused confusion. Thank you Graham for smoothing this over and assisting him!
Additionally, since it's now again New Year's Day, a time of increased interest in starting Bible Reading Plans, it seemed good to review these discussion threads and post the current revision--which is still in its beta testing phase. Career changes have recently slowed my subsequent completions, although I still spot-check and make notes and changes time-to-time. In looking over it briefly, many revisions have been made to the placement of the Psalms within the chronology. The Psalms seem to have been handled largely in bulk in the chronologies this stemmed from, and in my own devotional readings have had time to work on them with greater care--as if only sitting on the shoulders of the giants who came before me. It would be hard to understand how many years of work and adjustments they put in, for I've now been using and adjusting these for nearly 4 years, and still know they are in their beta phase. There are some really elaborate and piecemeal chronologies I could refer to, but in general I see the value in chapter (or half chapter) at a time readings, avoiding undue and continual flipping around for a verse or two--this is even something I personally want to avoid in Logo's electronic formats (where following the many links may work well for some). For me (and for others like me), it works well to set an audio bible to assist with the narratives and chapter-length sections seem to be the sweet spot for these. Additionally, a chapter-at-a-time format also assists a reader in understanding the individual verses within the broader context of the passages.
Four of the Psalms have now been moved within the NT chronology--and this may rightfully challenge philosophies of "the chronology of the authorship of a passage versus the thematic relevance or prophetic fulfillment of that same passage." One is David's Psalm 22. Although I fully support its Davidic authorship, next to the backdrop of even his deepest life valleys, it is difficult to find a compelling place to place Psalm 22 next to the events of his own life. Thus, David received a high definition picture and a breath of inspiration proper, and Psalm 22 paints such a vivid image of Christ's crucifixion, it has here been moved within the NT chronology. Similarly, Psalm 67 speaks of God's "saving power among the nations" and has been placed next to the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch, right before the conversion of Cornelius and his household--and these are followed, in turn, by Psalm 98, which proclaims, "he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of all nations. 3...All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God." One final move based on thematic relevance is Psalm 2, which prophesies Christ's Coronation to the reading of 2 Thessalonians, as the Apostle Paul gives encouragement and instruction on Christ's second coming, Ps 2:12 and 2Th 1:8 do well close together (and it's unclear to me where in the OT chronology Psalm 2 would fit as well). Nevertheless, my own theory of chronology-versus-relevance is coming into focus as I provide similar reasons in an earlier thread for the placement of Job, agreeing with F.LaGard Smith's placement as its thematic historical relevance seems to outweigh linguistic, historical literary, and archaeological concerns for this type of daily reading. If the above block is used without edits, it would only set up one reading per day. In the above blogs, extensive notes are made as to how to set up various reading programs (with the exception they were provided with the author using an outdated program--see the three previous comments), so I will run through it more briefly here (an instructional video also exists);
Here is the core suggested program with four daily reading sections, set for 2 or more years, with mixtures of OT Chronological, Psalms and Proverbs Devotional, and NT Chronological, 1 pass for the former, 6 additional passes for the devotionals, and 4 passes for the latter--and with two brief purpose passages (Ecc 3:1-8, Jer 6:16) to kick it off...
In summary;
{purpose}, {Psalms Devotional} x 6 | {OT Chronological} | {Proverbs Devotional} x 6 | {NT Chronological} x 4
