Hello All and Happy New Year!
This year, I will be teaching the book of Psalms for the very first time. While I have studied the Psalms and completed a rather in depth, two year study on the book, my fear is that I will fail to illumine and connect the various themes. Anyway, I am not teaching every Psalm, but I do plan on always making the student is aware of each Psalm's background, theme, topics, etc., etc.
What is your favorite resource (or two) for studying or teaching the Psalms. By the way, I am about 1/2 way through the Psalms course offered by FL, so you do not need to recommend that resource.
Thanks in advance!
Cynthia
Romans 8:28-38
i enjoyed Tremper Longman's How to Read the Psalms. Most chapters have a 'Suggestions for Psalm Study' section that might be helpful for your class. There are also exercises included throughout the book.
I really like
1. Boice's Expositional Commentaries: https://www.logos.com/product/8190/psalms-vol-1-psalms-1-41 (there are four volumes)
2. Kidner: https://www.logos.com/product/48768/psalms-1-72-an-introduction-and-commentary (there are two volumes)

I found the Cornerstone Commentary Psalms/Proverbs commentary helpful when I taught Psalms last year. Mark Futato is the author for the Psalms, the same person who teaches the Psalms Mobile Ed

Cynthia,
Am preaching through the Psalms at a nursing home.
The ones I always come back to are:
Preaching: NIV Application Commentary
Study: NICOT, Goldingay -Baker's Commentary on the OT &Wisdom
Spurgeon
Leaving you in God's Care and Grace.
The above recommendations are all good.
One that I've recently found useful is Christopher Ash's 2 volumes on the Psalms, in this set Christian Focus Teaching the Bible Upgrade (9 vols.) (currently in prepub)
Praying the Psalms: Engaging Scripture and the Life of the Spirit by Walter Brueggemann
Orthodox Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."
Phil Tuften: Cynthia, Am preaching through the Psalms at a nursing home. The ones I always come back to are: Preaching: NIV Application Commentary Study: NICOT, Goldingay -Baker's Commentary on the OT &Wisdom Spurgeon Leaving you in God's Care and Grace.
Phil: Thank you for your recommendations. More than that, I have to say it made my heart sing when you said you’re preaching through them in a nursing home. I pray God blesses you richly for ministering to the elderly. They are often the forgotten ones, and yet have so much desire to not only share their wisdom, but continue as a student.
Thanks everyone for these great recommendations. I was encouraged to see that about half of them, I actually already own! Keep your suggestions coming!
MJ. Smith: Praying the Psalms: Engaging Scripture and the Life of the Spirit by Walter Brueggemann
Another two very helpful books by Brueggemann on the Psalms are:

They are sermons on Psalm 23 👍😁👌
Cynthia, depending on how "deep" you want to get in teaching the Psalms, here is one of my favorite for explaining the structure of the Psalms and Hebrew Poetry. It is "a bit pricey," but it will help with explaining Hebrew poetry and by doing that, will open up the Psalms to another level of appreciation.

These are really great recommendations! Thank you very much. It gives me a lot to choose from!

I would recommend Bruce Waltke & James Houston's two volumes on the psalms:
The Psalms as Christian Worship: A Historical Commentary (Eerdmans, 2010)
The Psalms as Christian Lament: A Historical Commentary (Eerdmans, 2014)
They only cover selected psalms, but do them in depth with a history of how they have been interpreted. The first volume covers Psalms 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 15, 16, 19, 22, 23, 51, 110, and 139. The second volume covers Psalms 5, 6, 7, 32, 38, 39, 44, 102, 130, and 143. I wish they'd do more volumes and cover all the psalms. But both authors are getting on in years and it's not likely there will be more volumes forthcoming.
Also, not available in Logos (or any other digital format as far as I know), but excellent, is
