Thank you everyone. Logos was a big help in writing this. It helped me find Peter J. Leithart's commentary on 1 & 2 Kings, which I found fascinating on Elijah/Elisha.

Thanks for pointing this out and thank you Mark for writing it. For sure seeing the Holy Land firsthand brings a fresh perspective as I've had the opportunity to do so twice in my life.

It has been a number of years since I was last there and I now understand that the Jordan River has challenges with pollution from farming etc. these days. But I also hear that there are rehabilitation projects underway there now.

Thank you, Mark. Great article. I had the opportunity to see the Jordan again last October and to witness others being baptized in it. Very meaningful.

There was just an article about this in last week's Christianity Today.

Can Restoring the Jordan River Build Peace in the Holy Land?

Very insightful.

I have an opportunity to go to Israel next year w. a group of pastors.

Never been, but, I would not really want to see all of the “traditional” locations.  I really wish we knew of a bona-fide local (preferably raised in Jerusalem) who knew where all of the genuine locations (or at least vicinities) of biblical events were (we would make it wellll worth his or her time).

We've used Voice of Faith tours ( http://voftours.com ).  It's run by a man named Saliba.  He and his staff were awesome.

For those of  you considering travel/study in "The Land", I suggest you check out St. George's College in Jerusalem (https://www.saintgeorgescollegejerusalem.com/type/2019-programs/ ) and the Tantur Ecumenical Institute (https://tantur.org/enrichment-renewal-programs/ ). Neither is explicitly "evangelical", so you may want to cast your net more widely. One possibility is to browse the offerings of the Jerusalem University College (https://www.juc.edu/academics/short-term-study-programs/historical-geographical/ ).

Interesting link.  Checking it out now.

Thanks to everyone for these links!

Man, I want to go NOW 🤓!

BTW, I wonder how much $$ a couple would need to go for a week and not have to ”barely get by” while there (not talking about air fare).

I would surmise that much of that would depend on where you stay.  I would want to stay in a central location though.  Will check into AirBNB’s over there.
