This sale looks amazing... but a little overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Does anyone have any recommendations or purchases (from 2019/20) they’d care to share? :-)

I was going to ask the same question. Last time I bought (and kept)

https://www.logos.com/product/20263/the-fire-that-consumes-a-biblical-and-historical-study-of-the-doctrine-of-final-punishment-3rd-ed

https://www.logos.com/product/121438/an-exposition-of-galatians-a-reading-from-the-new-perspective

https://www.logos.com/product/162403/called-to-believe-teach-and-confess-an-introduction-to-doctrinal-theology

I later regretted not buying this book as I noticed Denver Seminary give it a strong recommendation.

https://www.logos.com/product/121427/reading-revelation-responsibly-uncivil-worship-and-witness-following-the-lamb-into-the-new-creation

I'm also thinking of buying this book this time round as I'm planning on preaching about the resurrection in April.

I did buy and return last time the commentaries by Cyril Barber last time purely because, along with other purchases, I spent too much that month. Does anyone have any views on how useful Cyril Barber's expositions are and any books in particular they found useful?

Really it depends on your interest--the selection is very wide-ranging.

The last sale I picked up Biblical Eschatology by Jonathan Menn, and I just finished reading it recently. It was surprisingly good. Like, really really good. I'm going to use it whenever I next write or teach on the subject.

Gustaf Aulén's Christus Victor and Faith of the Christian Church are essentials for those interested in systematic theology.

There are also many resources on different aspects of the Pentecostal movement, some of which again are quite essential.

EDIT: I see on posting that this sale also include The Fire that Consumes. That's a volume I've had for a long time. It is a must-have on the subject of conditional immortality vs. eternal conscious torment.

Thanks for the Biblical Eschatology suggestion. It was on my shortlist last time but missed the cut due to financial constraints.

Thanks for the review. I picked it up and look forward to reading it.

Other than the nine books tagged as Catholic or Orthodox, does anyone have any suggestions of volumes in this sale that may be of particular interest to a Catholic reader? These may include books that ought to be so tagged but that at present are not. They could also include Bible commentaries of ecumenical value, works on or relating to Church Fathers, etc.

Well, the one I almost got was the detecting spirits one .... which is in your group. There was another but it was pretty iffy:

I'm not 100% convinced that it should be tagged as Catholic. (The author isn't.) But that's for another thread.

Thanks. Not quite my cup of hot chocolate.

Hey is charlesworths odes of Solomon the same as the chapter in his OT pseudepigrapa or does it have more detailed analysis? Does it have a revised translation?

Also is mbuvi's commentary on Jude and 2 peter, would someone comment on it? Worth it?

I don't have this, but read the samples. The commentary idea is interesting, and 2Pe/Jude would have been an interesting application. But the author treats speculation as validity, and that was the pass, for me. Speculation is fine (often necessary), but not presented as factual.

The translation is the same (I sampled several odes, and unusual wording). The intros are similar; from what I can see, he kind of dumbed-down his PG volume wording, keeping the same points, structure.  If you have PG, you don't need the OS volume.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just picked up these two.

Last time, I picked up these two:

https://www.logos.com/product/162431/did-jesus-rise-from-the-dead-the-resurrection-debate (not yet read)

https://www.logos.com/product/162400/beyond-death-exploring-the-evidence-for-immortality (truly excellent book)

Some of the books I bought independently of the last sale:

Read cover to cover:

https://www.logos.com/product/62014/the-son-rises-historical-evidence-for-the-resurrection-of-jesus (very solid, but I expect "resurrection debate" to be better)

https://www.logos.com/product/62012/the-kalam-cosmological-argument (probably the best book on the topic)

https://www.logos.com/product/62013/the-only-wise-god-the-compatibility-of-divine-foreknowledge-and-human-freedom (still good, but in retrospect it doesn't sufficiently deal with objections to Molinism)

Read individual chapters, found to be excellent, and want to read cover to cover in the future:

Wow! I'm glad they brought this sale back! I just purchased 15 new books for almost $75 that would've costed so much more if I had bought them at regular price or some other sale!  They should have this sale at least once a year Yes

Thank you FL and Wipf & Stock!

They're both household names! I recommend Daniel Block.  Cyril I've heard he's good and practical, but I returned his books last time to purchase others that I wanted.  So maybe someone else can pitch in.  I know Mark Barnes recommended Cyril Barber, so his recommendations are usually on point. Yes I decided to skip Cyril again because if I get his commentaries, the bill quickly adds up.  Gotta buy responsibility too 👍😁👌 I’ll probably get them next time if they run another sale like this one in the future.

Ps. After reading some samples and looking at the table of contents and the good outline material on Cyril Barber commentaries, I decided to get 5 of his books.  Samuel volume 1 & 2, Kings volume 1 & 2 and the volume on Job.  I like what I see and the potential of doing a series on those books of the Old Testament.  And since he's very practical, I went ahead and got only what I needed and could potentially use in the near future.
