I would like to see the following in Verbum:

  • The Seven Last Words by Fulton J. Sheen - of historical interest to your older customers
  • The Seven Last Words from the Cross by St. Robert Bellarmine S.J.
  • Cross-Shattered Christ: Meditations on the Seven Last Words by Stanley Hauerwas
  • Seven Last Words by Timothy Radcliffe O.P.
  • Watch and Pray With Me: The Seven Last Words by Karl Rahner

Orthodox Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."

Great topic! Have you read all those? I just got the print copy of Archbishop Sheen's - I'm sure it's going to be excellent. If you read the others, what are your thoughts on them? Thanks.

I've read Sheen and Bellarmine but so long ago I scarcely remember them. The Karl Rahner one is likely my favorite of all time - I read it nearly every Good Friday. I had the good fortune of hearing Timothy Radcliffe actually preach his version ... everything by Radcliffe is excellent. Hauerwas is thought provoking - I recommend it but it won't replace Rahner in my heart.

I updated your suggestions and the existing resources in Logos/Verbum to the Reading List on the Seven Last Words.

You'll be glad to see that Hauerwas' book is already in Logos/Verbum - as are now the two books by Fleming Rutledge which were on the list.

Also of interest to younger ones, I think. His Cause for Canonization has helped keep him accessible to younger folk.

We need more Bellarmine.
