I don't understand how this works or doesn't work.

1. In 2 Kings 17:15 I highlight the the word עֵֽדְוֺתָ֔יו go to the context menu, choose "selection", choose the search for: lemma:עֵדוּת@NCFPC BEFORE 4 CHARS lemma:הוּא@RS3MS

2. I get 20 hits in 10 verses.

3. I delete manually the part of the search "lemma:הוּא" from the search line and hit enter for: lemma:עֵדוּת@NCFPC BEFORE 4 CHARS @RS3MS

This gives me 35 hits in 35 Verses:

4. Now I do nothing, just hit enter again and I get 20 result with 10 verses. The search line changed now automaticaly to lemma:עֵדוּת@NCFPC BEFORE 4 CHARS <LogosMorphHeb ~ RS3MS??>

What is going on? How did I get the 35 hits before and than by repeating the search I get only 10? What is the proper way to search for עדות with any plural suffix?

Your second search is getting all uses of the lemma + tag since the search query is incorrect as seen below. Logos corrected the search formula for the 3rd search. If you run the search from scratch you will see the inclusion that Logos included on the 3rd search.

You cannot just use @RS3MS. Logos corrected the search for you in the 3rd search. Maybe not the way you want to work, but that is the explanation of what is going on.

Hi John, thank you for your clarification, you helped me to understand what is going on.

Can you also help me to understand how to search for the suffix <LogosMorphHeb ~ R?2????> after emma:עֵדוּת@N???C  to catch only עֵדְוֺתֶ֥יךָ?

Greetings

Mendel

Hi Mendel,

Glad I could explain what is going on. I am not at my computer currently. Hopefully someone else can offer assistance to you more quickly.

When I search for the manuscript word עֵדְוֺתֶ֥יךָ  I get 7 results in 7 verses

When I search one of those results via Selection in the context menu, it provides

lemma:עֵדוּת@NCFPC BEFORE 4 CHARS lemma:אַתָּה@RS2MS with 48 results in 24 verses (where S = suffixed)

The same results occur with lemma:אַתָּה@RS2

And I get the same result in BHW 4.18 with  lemma:עֵדוּת@ncfpc+S2, where  S2 specifies the same suffix.

I can't explain the difference between the manuscript word result and the Morphology results.

The right context menu allows for Logos to set up various searches the user may want to run. There are searches from the lemma and from the manuscript. Here is a wiki article that explains the options. https://wiki.logos.com/Right_Click_Menu#Selection

Here is a video explaining the context menu. https://support.logos.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016600052-Context-Menu I am not sure it addresses the various Hebrew search options, but may provide some additional understanding.

The BEFORE 4 CHARS is a command in this case for Logos to search for a specific suffix along with the specific lemma. It searches 4 characters before..l

The articles discusses Greek search options rather than Hebrew, but I think it will provide you an idea of the various option available with a right mouse click from the context menu. I think once you understand what each search does you will appreciate the power available from the context menu searches.

Hope this helps. BTW I am not proficient in Hebrew, so if my terminology is not accurate, someone feel free to correct me.

Thank you! What means  BEFORE 4 CHARS

Because a Hebrew "word" (segment) can comprise a prefix and a suffix, one has to count characters to delineate parts of the segment. The main word would occur AFTER a prefix and BEFORE a suffix. A suffix/prefix would usually be separated by only 1 CHAR from the main word, but 4 CHARS allows for other separators.

Thanks! Do I understand it right that the BHW doesn't need the CHAR specification?

Yes. That particular morphology allows you to specify a Pronominal suffix with certain parts of speech (e.g. noun, adjective, verb) rather than search separately for pronouns that are "Suffixed".
