When you upgrade (from 4.0c) to 4.0d your indexes will be automatically rebuilt.

It's any 4.0d version if you are upgrading from 4.0c.

Thanks Dave, what I meant was did you mean 4.0d RC 1 when you said 4.0d? Is this the final release, or is there going to be an official 4.0d? I now have the opportunity to merge my indexes again. To what extent will this make a difference to searching in 4.0d?

The info applies to any version of 4.0d to which you upgrade from 4.0c, whether an RC or the official release in the near future. It will only re-index when you first update to 4.0d.

If you mean that updating to 4.0d is the "opportunity" you are correct. It does an automatic full re-index because of some changes to Morph searching & morph searches in non-bibles and because the proper Merge function is re-introduced (see 4.0d Release Notes).

I'll try again. Is 4.0d RC 1 the 'final' version of 4.0d, or will there be an 'official' release of 4.0d in the future which will not be a Release Candidate? I understand that the re-indexing information you supplied will apply to any version of 4.0d. What I want to know is whether or not RC 1 is the final version of 4.0d.

Thanks, I'll read the Release Notes.

RC2 will probably be the formal release, RC1 still has a bug or two it seems

I answered that:-

or the official release in the near future
If I could be more definite I would have said so!

Normally any RC could become the official release in the near future if no bugs are found in it. However with this one, it appears they goofed and left the "RC 1" text in the version number, so for that reason alone they will have to put out another Release Candidate. As Dave pointed out, there have also been a couple of more serious bugs found. We're not sure when RC2 will be, nor even whether that will end up being the final released version. But surely it's not going to be much more than a week or so from now. Maybe two at the outside, if lots more bugs are found. If you upgrade now, you can do the index rebuild and you won't have to do it again when you get the final released version.

Thanks everyone. I didn't see anything about indexing and merging in the 4.0d RC 1 release notes.

Jonathan Burke:

Thanks everyone. I didn't see anything about indexing and merging in the 4.0d RC 1 release notes.

There was this in the 4.0d Beta 3 release notes:

  • Fixed bug that caused the indexer to insert content-verse sections at page boundaries, increasing the number of verses in results. After Beta 3 update, it will be necessary to enter ‘rebuild Bible index’ command (when convenient). (http://community.logos.com/forums/t/17614.aspx)

The 4.0d final release notes will include all the cumulative release notes from all the betas, but it hasn't been posted yet. Here's the "What's new" queued up ready to go (not linked in yet): http://www.logos.com/L4/support/whatsnew40d. It notes this about Indexing:

  • Merging has been reintegrated.

I didn't realize that indexes would be automatically rebuilt, but if Dave knows something I don't know, then Logos must have forced that somehow since Beta 3, to make sure people did it.

Thanks Rosie. I didn't notice Logos rebuilding my indexes. It did ask me if I wanted to merge them. I haven't bothered yet. I'm not sure if it makes any difference these days.

I hope that LOGOS releases this early in the week - I cannot afford be down all day Friday or Saturday.

A number of people (myself included) reported an automatic re-index when updating to 4.0d Beta1 so I sought clarification here, because there had been no warning in the Release Notes.

The Beta 3 Notes was specific to that bug with the bible index.

So:-

I fully expected automatic indexing would occur for people updating from 4.0c to any 4.0d version, but there was no warning in the 4.0d RC1 Release Notes! If it does not occur then there is still the issue from Beta 3 that will affect users because that was voluntary! Logos need to clarify what users can expect to happen during the upgrade and/or what users will have to do for themselves.

I went from 4.0d Beta 3 to 4.0d Beta 4 to 4.0d RC1, and I don't think I experienced a full reindex during either of those transitions. But it might have snuck it on me while I was away from the computer and not realizing it was doing it.

The automatic indexing was not connected with Beta 3 - it would have happened when you updated from 4.0c to any 4.0d beta version.

I don't recall it happening when I went from 4.0c to 4.0d Beta 1 either. But it might have. That was long enough ago that I might have forgotten. I just haven't recalled a full index in a LONG time (a couple of months at least), and I think it we me who forced it the last time I did it.
