Mattillo:

Doug, just curious when you think those updates will be pushed out. March? Q2? Thank you

No fixed timeline. Here's what needs to happen.

  1. Author sends me the content for John 1–10.
  2. I make time to review the content.
  3. We send it for copyediting when our copyeditor for this project is available (easier than explaining what needs to be done to a new copy editor).
  4. I receive it back from the copyeditor, review her work, resolve any questions with the author, and finalize the files.
  5. I send the files to the people at Faithlife who will make sure it gets in the right format to add to the Logos resource.
  6. They finish their work and schedule the update for the next regularly scheduled resource update window (which I think is every 2 weeks or so).

So we're at #1 and I hope to have that one settled in February with #2 happening right after #1 if at all possible. If that happens, #3 would happen in March. And so on. Sometime in Q2 is possible if I get the content in the next few weeks and the copyeditor is available.

I think you'll be happy with the final results. It's likely to turn out to be the highest word count of coverage for the NT books due to the depth of connections to point out for John's Gospel.

I have no doubt I'll be extremely pleased! Hence why I keep bugging you :)

I really, really like the stuff Lexham/Logos/FL puts out.  Great stuff and top notch quality.

I'm looking forward to the LCC both OT and NT, the OT Lexham Geographic Comms, and the NT introduction series (3 volume).  I'm quite happy with the EEC too!

Thank you for taking the time to respond sir

Doug Mangum:

Mattillo:

Good Morning! Just curious how John is coming for the Context Commentary... end of Q3 or sooner?  Thank you

The author is still wrapping up his final draft for John. It is a substantial contribution to the LCC at over 100k words. We intend to have it out this fall, but that will depend on when he submits his final draft. The OT counterpart is also underway, and we hope to have it substantially completed over the next 18 months.

Doug

I noticed the LCC OT was updated today but it obviously isn't finished yet. Just curious how that is coming along and what updates were made if you know.

My focus recently with LCC has been on the editorial for John 1–10, so my co-editors were the ones responsible for the OT update. I think it was adding content that has come in and been edited since last fall, but I don't know the particulars.

I believe this update was more internal corrections than new content, as the version is dated 2/11/21. The next new content update is planned for early Fall with the content submitted by early summer, which should be the Pentateuch and most of the Historical Books. The balance of the material will be shipped when it is all completed, hopefully by end of Q1 of 2022.

Good evening Doug! Just checking back on LCC John. You mention 1-10 above. Is anyone working on the other half as well?

The same author is finishing John 11–21. The first half is going through editorial here, but I don't have an estimate yet of when it will appear in the resource.

Doug Mangum:

Geographic Commentary Pentateuch is in the late stages of editorial production and map/media curation and creation with digital release likely sometime in the next few months. Content for Geographic Commentary Historical Books is in very early stages of editorial review. Submissions for Geographic Commentary Poetry/Prophecy are just starting to trickle in (they weren't due until next month).

Good Morning Doug!

2nd question... how is the Geographic Commentary coming?

I'm sorry for the delay in replying, Mattillo. I was out of the office most of last week.

I believe Lexham Geographic Commentary on the Pentateuch is close to being ready to be prepared for release in Logos. We had some custom images and maps still in the works. I don't know that a specific release date is set yet, though, or whether the digital production process has started yet. For the other Geographic Commentary volumes, Historical vol 1 is in first round Lexham editorial (academic review and dialogue with authors about their content). Historical vol 2 is pending completion of first round work on vol 1. Poetry and Prophecy content is either with the authors (still writing), with the series editor, or submitted and waiting in line behind Historical Books.

Lexham Context Commentary: Old Testament is moving along, but most of the current batch of content is waiting on me to organize and pass along to the copy editor. The notes on a few books are still with the authors, but most of it has gone through our first round of editing that happens prior to copy edits. Then there's a batch of notes that have come back from copy edit but are awaiting final review. I'm currently the bottleneck there, but I was not planning to release an update to the OT until I got everything in from the authors. It remains to be seen whether this current round of writing will be "it" for the resource or whether we'll keep going with adding more detail. This round mostly adds notes to the "Paragraph" level, but in some parts of the OT, that left room for more detail to be added for users to be able to "zoom in" to a span of a few verses (which had been my original goal). I'm leaning toward a third round of writing for some books where more detail might be helpful. But if I do that, I still plan to release the round 2 content, probably in the first half of next year (round 1 was what came out with Logos 9).

I don't have updated information on LCC John. Final review of the notes on John 1–10 is still in my court because I have too many competing things to edit (just being honest).

With my projects, I am trying to give you a bit of a look behind the scenes, and things are moving ahead at different stages. With these series, outcomes are much more in my control and less dependent on others. We do have content in hand; there are words on a page somewhere for editors to work on. I'm not always able to accurately predict when we'll finish working on those words, though. For example, LCC John is 75k words on just John 1–10. LCCOT is somewhere north of 600k words (I haven't finished calculating yet). LGC Pentateuch is over 320k words; LGC Historical Books vols 1 and 2 are over 420k words. And LGC Poetry and Prophecy should come in around 175k–200k. I can't move too much faster without sacrificing quality.

That's awesome! Though it is sad LCCNT will take a bit longer, I'm glad quality is the focus. I appreciate the time you took to respond to this.

I hope you have a great night!

Asking for updates every few weeks doesn't make the process go any faster. Maybe just wait. Writing a commentary is probably not a linear process like manufacturing goods on an assembly line. It's hard for them to give precise timelines.

I was curious if you might have a end of 2021 update on the above titles.

There's been a little progress since September, but nothing really significant. Things are slow because so many of these things are waiting on me to literally wade through hundreds of thousands of words.

  • The last bit of work on Geographic Commentary Pentateuch is almost done.
  • The chapters for Geographic Commentary Historical vol 1 have all been reviewed and are waiting on authors to return revisions.
  • The review is started on Historical vol 2 chapters.
  • No change on Geographic Commentary Poetry/Prophecy.
  • No change on LCC John. Notes on 1–10 are waiting on me. Notes on 11–21 are waiting on the author.
  • Another round of content went through copy editing for LCCOT, so there is a huge amount of word count waiting on my review.
  • All of the currently contracted content for LCCOT has been submitted and is waiting on pre-copy edit review. (That and the above point is round 2 of LCCOT content)
  • There will be more content contracted and written (that's round 3) before LCCOT is done, but I'm still working out what it will need and what can be released of round 2 while round 3 is being written.
