The mind of man is the mill of God, not to grind chaff, but wheat. Thomas Manton | Study hard, for the well is deep, and our brains are shallow. Richard Baxter

Exodus receives this recommendation with caution.

1 Peter is included in Don Carson's best buys, although he says it needs to be used with discernment.
The Daniel volume recommendation I've seen is for those doing research, rather than for preachers, etc. So I'm passing on this one.

Thanks Paul. Perfect.

I wish I knew what Ligonier meant by Childs' "critical stance".

Ah, to me that is a useful recommendation ... I am not interested in commentaries that only confirm my prejudices.
Orthodox Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."
Discernment seems to be necessary with every commentary and resource. I am amazed at how readily people swallow really bad secular stuff that pervades modern higher education and it seems to be perfectly acceptable to trundle it into print.
On the plus side, it does make me spend more time in prayer. If it wasn't for the Holy Spirit, I would not open half of the commentaries I do.

I would guess questioning the authorship, date of exodus, and/or considers some stuff un-historical
This review mentions some of that: https://jamesbradfordpate.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/beginning-childs-commentary-on-exodus/

OK. I didn't realize that Ligonier was so thoroughly opposed to the use of the historical critical method. (Childs was--famously--much less 'into' hist-crit as generally understood than most scholars.)

Yeah I wouldn't say that as they don't make it clear which is a shame but your guess is as good as mine. I did stumble across this article today though... found it interesting.
